They are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) which is slightly different than phillips. A phillips screwdriver will mess up the JIS screws every time.

You need to get JIS screwdrivers to work on theses bikes.

I am. I do not have JIS bits but have sourced ordered some.

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

The carbs are gone away (as a problem). back on the bike, with XS pods, all the screws replaced (albeit with some at extra length). One of the carb boot clamps was destroyed when I took them off, so I ordered two replacements. I do not know why two.

With Mikes XS pods the hose clamps are usually a little too wide. Makes 'em want to slip off before they get all the way tight. I robbed Betsy's old airbox for its thinner clamps, and they work a LOT better. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

Well.......with that style of fastener, can easily see that happening when you try to "strong-arm" the fastener.

I find almost every stainless bolt and screw I need at my local Ace Hardware. I use the button heads for a lot of things, as they look nice, and aren't as high as the standard allen head.

Thanks Beard! NOW I know why I ordered more band clamps than I needed. I had noticed the "squeezing off" problem with the pods but didn't connect it to the clamp size. God is good.

ETA... turns out the ordering two thing was only part of the overabundance. As I still haven't disposed of any take-offs, I have clamps from the airbox also. Happy Happy
