Screws for Float Bowls and diaphram caps:

I didnt manage to save all of them. What material is best? My boating projects have made me a big fan of stainless. Local sources have machine screws in 5mm, and stainless machine screws in SAE sizes, but no stainless metric machine screws. What is everyone else using with success? Zinc plated? Gold plated? Blue Anodized?

Yeah it's a pretty blue, but just because you're old is no excuse to buy a bagger. Fortunately I have wrenches.

I put in "m5 stainless allen" in ebay and got lots of options. *Hint.. in the advanced setting, click "from preferred location: U.S. " to get rid of the China option.. unless you have a month to wait for it.

That being said, my local true value hardware always has that type of screw in stainless.

      Thanks biggy.

I was going to stay with phillips. No reason not to use callen socket heads. May even help me avoid consternation over whether I'm using the wrong bit.

Lots of phillips options as well. If you buy a "Stainless kit" off ebay for these bikes, it comes will all stainless bolts in allen, even for the carb caps. I like them because even when they seize up a bit, like those cap screws tend to, you don't strip out the allens like the phillips. But.. everyone is free to their own opinions. It's just.. that if you don't agree with me, your opinion is wrong? lol..

Probably. you see, every allen head Ive used has stripped out. Or the socket rusted after the finish failed. Those weren't stainless

            Pretty

chrome are at Ace and maybe True Value. Pretty but costly though they sure are pretty.
Did I say that they are pretty ? ? ?
You may also be able to save what you have with some light hammering and then use a phillips to re-shape the slot again with light hammering.

                I routinely

remove all the Philips from my carbs and replace with allen style. I get mine in bulk from Brofasco. For the diaphragms I use the domed ones.

I run allen head type bolts in all my carbs. I've also got helicoils in every single hole, which is what you have to do when you ham-fist those bolts. I'm not a big fan of steel bolts in aluminum holes, but it is what it is, and they don't have to be that awful tight - I'm thinking 3 or 4 foot pounds, if that. JAT
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

I use that light thread locker for 6mm or smaller fasteners, Loctite 222 or Permatex 24024. It keeps the metals from seizing and it also works nicely to lock those stupid carb adjuster screws so they can't creep but you can adjust them again later with no problems.

A good JIS screwdriver helps a lot too instead of a Phillips....

Loctite's sort of a 'leet product or at least it can be hard to find a local walk-in store that carries it so I use the Permatex version from any one of a dozen local hardware and auto parts houses. Right now it's purple but who knows what it'll be in a few years.

Are you aware that the screws that are on these bike that aprear to be Phillips are not?

They are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) which is slightly different than phillips. A phillips screwdriver will mess up the JIS screws every time.

You need to get JIS screwdrivers to work on theses bikes.

Love when a thread takes off. i'm not sure to whom the "are you aware not phllips" question was directed, but I am. That's a plus to the allen head option, although I am patient with my Philips bolts, and havent had a cam-out. Either I'm not so patient with the Allens, or they require still more patience, as i have a very bad reputation amongst marksment regarding my scope mounting talent. Teensy allen head machine screws are hard to find, btw.

Scope mounting - NOW you're talking! I just picked up a new Wheeler ring lapping set last week that came with an inch-pound torque driver. I don't usually over tighten them, but it's always a good idea to torque to manufacturer's spec. And that little torque driver is the perfect tool for torquing carb bolts. Regarding the small allen head bolts - I get 'em at Sears Hardware or Ace Hardware. I haven't checked the local Menard's for small allen head bolts, but they've got a pretty good selection of hardware, and I'll bet they've got 'em too.
