    Looks good, Scott!

It's always that little overlooked detail that can really screw ya on the road, huh?

Here's hoping that Maxim's now bulletproof, and you have a great ride... all the way there and back.

    Safe journey!

The transmission is no good. Until I get a new 'tuit shipped sometime next week after I fix the center stand the bike'll still let me ride around town and make a few short trips without mooching rides.

Fixed my trans overnight a couple days before I attended my first XSSE.

That's how Diver Ray and I helped Special Ed fix his transmission. It took a couple of days on the weekend, not a couple of hours but I know what you're saying!

Yeah, yeah, I know: welder; Monday; center stand; fix!

The hard truth is simple time and distance. There is not enough time to cover the distance. I would wind up doing a couple of back-to-back Iron Butt rides or at least several six or seven-hundred mile days to make it in time and I don't have the iron or the butt. It's ~2,200 miles to Atlanta; ~2,270 straight through on I-40 to the 'Horse and I swore I would never ride that way again after the last time. If poor little Debby needed a kidney and for some reason even medical aircraft were grounded I'd try it but that's about it.

Oh Scotty, please help me, I need a kidney so bad, and Flight for Life is grounded due to flatulence. I can bring a friend, if that would make you happier.

That's what I was thinking too! Little Debbie's a redhead and they can grow up cute or like orangutans. With my luck it'd be the latter and between her and her friend she'd be the looker.

I agree but not 100%. It looks like it hit the 'stand in a left-hand corner or went down but there's no sign of damage or replacement parts so only the PO knows what happened.

Hands-off the 'bars it tracks smooth and straight as an arrow, not even a twitch.

It has ~60 original K on the clock and these bikes are supposed to be all-day runners good for hundreds of thousands so it's still barely broken in.

I believe the '850 mod magnified the problem. I do know about the transmission problems so I did a SQUID from the dealer to the gas station, then grabbed several whole handfuls of throttle going up the hill to the house and the transmission never slipped, it just worked. The cam chain is stock and the marks on the tensioner show it hasn't been used and abused, it's barely moved from its original factory position.

I didn't go to the welder's today. My little brother and I have to be in Indio at 6 AM for court to deal with the ongoing stupidity since Mom died. I did it by myself last month, this month we're going together and getting a room so we don't have to leave at 2 AM to be on time.

That's where the stand grinds on the pavement when you get into a left hander a bit hot. Mine has those scars.

                    • I do remember that!

I have another 'stand from a Special that I'm taking to the welder. It's clean, doesn't need paint and doesn't have the scrapes.

On a personal note, court went well today, the judge ruled and hopefully all of the stupidity is done. Hopefully.

                      • I got the transmission fixed and it shifts perfectly with no skipping.

Now the clutch slips, time for some Barnett springs.

                        • And it hasn't stopped giving yet: the welder is busy now that the bike is running and on Tuesday he's going out of town for a couple of weeks. If I'd brought the bike in when I first bought it his schedule was clear and he was bored out of his mind so he'd have been able to fix it but now I have to wait until he gets back next month to get the 'stand welded. No worry, no hurry.

After I found all that sand in my '80G's engine I really didn't want to use Columbo's gear stack so I put in one of the other spares with fewer miles and grit baths on it. That fixed the 1st gear skip, now 2nd gear skips but hey! at least I was wrong and the clutch is good! I should have just used the '80G gears but fortunately or unfortunately I've done this enough before that it's not really difficult, just annoying and the bike runs great for now. The 2nd gear skip is not as bad as the 1st gear skip so the bike's seriously fun to ride! I ordered some new clutch springs and I'll be reworking the original XJ gear stack this week.

Yes you can change the gear stack with just the kickstand.

                            • The new brakes are fine!

Len/Chacal had a new OEM octy so I picked up one of the last ones on the planet. The one on the XJ had a ripped diaphragm and made the #2 cylinder run way too lean, it was just too old:

I've been feeling edgy and worried for a while now because I found a new, unopened, XJ11 front caliper seal kit the morning after the failed attempt to head back East. I talked with Len and his inventory was correct so I had a bad feeling that in the push to get finished for the trip to XSSE, I messed up and put one set of old, rotted, seal sets back into one of the front calipers.

I don't usually throw out old parts until I'm sure I won't need them for some reason but I could only find one front set, the other set and the rear were gone and I thought I'd tossed them in the trash until tonight when I found them at the bottom of the tool bin. Yes! I won't have to take apart the front brakes! I know beyond any possible doubt that they're the right ones because the XJ11 front calipers are unique and the rear is the same as the XS11 Specials.

Here's the new HCP748 OEM front disc brake CALIPER SEAL KIT at the top with its fluid and dusts seals and a packet of red grease. The two old front sets are below it and the larger, single, rear seal is in the middle.

                              Whew!

                              • The new fuel valve came in, last of the Mohicans:

This little gem is item #18 in the XJ11 Intake fiche:
