  • No ride? Get an XJ1100!

I got tired of bumming rides while I work on my '80G so I went back to Simi Valley Cycles and dropped my wallet in front of that beautiful, one-owner, black XJ11 they showed me out back when I almost-bought a Triumph.

It was $2.5K out the door all legal and stuff with keys and papers in my hand so I rode it to the gas station, then home. There are a few issues like a small dent in the lower right-hand side of the tank; chrome trim missing on the air box; battery sensor making the warning light flash and turn signals that don't but it's a sweet little bike with new -- solid -- brakes, some soft bags, a windshield and new shoes and socks.

I still have to check it out before I actually go ride anywhere and at least fix the stupid battery sensor but for now I don't have to walk!

    Nice windshield.

    Tank paint looks good.

Less than 60K on the clock.

New tires but look like they've been sitting for a while.

I'll have to check the date codes and see how old they are but they look pretty good.

    The dent.

Why of course I trust the stock octy and the floats.

    With the tank bag.

    Oh, yeah!

Nice Bike @ At a fair price....

    3Phase,
That is a nice looking bike! Congrats!!! Happy & Safe Riding to ya!

    Tank Dent....
I once saw a guy at a car show pulling little dents paint free.... That looks like a POSSIBLE candidate. The guy was using a bunch of little blunt plastic punches and a little hammer. He had mirrors and all kinds of wizzz-bang little gizmos. He kept working slowly all around the dent massaging the edge and eventually it POPPED right out... That MIGHT BE a good candidate for that. I think he was charging like $50 a dent.

    KURT

P.S. I love the plate! "Hang on & Shut Up" - I need one of those!!!

      Way to go Scott.

      I love it. Great purchase.
As you said, why mess around when you don't have to.

      Bike is beauty too.

So if just maybe you might be inclined to take a ride I know just the place. We'd love to see you.

Thanks! I'm happy with it and I talked 'em down $300 on the price. Kurt, that tank dent fixer sounds like a total plan, it's why the bike wasn't more money. At least the crew at Yamaha won't give me the gorilla-eye and look away really fast when I go in to order parts.

I was wrong about the chrome on the air box, the XJ didn't have the the fancy plates on its air box like the XS11s but I am looking for a YICS port blanking tool so I can sync' the carbs'. I was also thing-king about another run back east, just to see my Dad, you know.

I need to go ride now.

It most likely has the wrong battery in it, no sensor.

You might consider deleting the airbox straightaway and getting some good pods to go on there. You'll HATE trying to pull those carbs with the OEM box on there.

                3Phase,
My personal experience with tuning XJ's (I've worked on a few for friends and I own a small one [550]), if tuned PROPERLY, the bike runs better without the Eliminator. But it MUST BE TUNED with it.

Yahman's the first person I thought of for the YICS eliminator.

Oh, yes, the battery is definitely the wrong one. I just need to find a resistor and lie to the computer so it'll stop flashing. I haven't decided about the air box yet. The only one I've removed before was the one on the wreck that I bought and it was crushed back halfway under the seat and the upper frame so I kind of expected to have trouble taking it out. I think I still have the brand new filter from it around... somewhere.

Carbs were synched and it ran fine...no other tuning was needed...nary an issue...I had that bike 30 years and in all that time it never ran better than after the YICS tool was installed...There are quite a few others here who believe in it as well...I could feel the improvements so naturally i'm going to recommend it....but with this caveat...YMMV...

Excellent choice for a daily driver. I have never once regretted purchasing my XJ1100 in 2012. I restored and drove an XJ650 from 2008 to 2012. I loved that bike as well.

The XJ1100 rear master cylinder is a royal pain in the butt to remove and to re-install. The installation of new brake lines to and from the rear master cylinder is no fun as well. Cleaning the rear master cylinder is easy. That is a plus.

The safety interlock relay left me stranded on a long road trip. It would be good for you to locate this relay and familiarize yourself with bypassing this relay. Bypassing is a simple jumper wire installation into the socket where the interlock relay wants to reside.

My fuel tank has two dents from the PO. None are repaired yet. My gauge cluster was DOA. I replaced with an eBay XS650 speedo that required some surgery to make it fit. The tach was replaced with an eBay tach. The speedo and tach are not robust.

                            Cheers and happy riding.
