Had a weird drip under the E, it was mostly on the left side but changed location. When it was finally time to drain the break in oil I actually got underneath the bike to see if I could find the source. Turns out the neutral switch was leaking. Not around the threads but through the switch itself. The oil would blow back on the frame and drip where ever it liked. I didn't know the switch could leak like that but as usual, if it could happen, it would happen to me. Luckily I had a spare so all is good now.

I don't think there's oil in the neutral switch part of the engine-- I replaced mine 2 years ago, and it was a no-leak change out.79 F

I'm going to
take mine apart but oil was leaking past the plunger and dripping out around the black mastic gasket around the screw seat. Then it dripped off the wire connector screw. Skids, oil is all over the place in that location, if the switch is faulty, the oil can get in.Last edited by mack; 06-25-2016, 08:13 AM.mack

Hey Mack,
Glad you had a spare. BTW, research shows that the OEM # 2H7-82540-00-00 has be superceded by this one, used in both boat engines, and ATVs, as well as several V-stars. 4KM-82540-00-00
boats.net has them for only $18.18 plus S&H.

I checked the microfiche, but I can't see the engine/tranny case area where the neutral switch scews into the engine, but it does make contact with a lever that pushes against it when in the neutral position, so I would expect there to be oil there.
BTW, here's a photo from the Tranny repairs section explaining how the tranny works, and you can see beyond the tranny case cover in the upper right corner the neutral switch screwed into the case as the END position of the shift drum. Where is screws in is an oil chamber, but when the engine is stopped, all of the oil should be down in the sump pan, so it may have been able to be removed without loosing any oil.

Oil Pan
nice picture. The pan has deflectors that direct oil up into the shift drum when the gears turn. It's basically an oil storm in there with the motor running. The smaller deflector channels the oil rain to the kick start gear. It's such a simple efficient system. Thanx for the tip on a replacement. I priced one out up here and if I remember it was $38.00 canmack

You can put a short bolt in it"s place if need be with a brake hose crush washer, no more safety light though. The light will remain off with no ground feed.2H7 (79) owned since '89

But then I wouldn't be able to start the bike without holding in the clutch lever. I know not all of the bike have this interlock, but some do - like the added sidestand interlock on the XJ.Ray Matteis

True, but I hate it when people hack stuff like that just to bypass something that could be repaired.Ray Matteis
