TC, In VA you can get a Antique registration and license plate and the bike is exempt from inspection. There are some rules of which I remember that you must have another registered vehicle to use and you can't go further than 250 miles unless it's for an "event" that involves the bike. I have antique plates and have never found it restrictive.

Ditto that, Scarlet has antique plates and haven't had an issue either.

Pink Floyd's "TIME" comes to mind!

        Hey RichV/George,

Yeah, I know about the Antique plates, but I don't like the black/orange, and also the limitation of usage...even though I don't ride it that much, I want to be able to ride it when/where I want without worry about hassle from cops!

Sorry no photos for this quick update. Got the fenders primered. Cleaned and painted the triple tree after removing the LOWER steering bearing! Yesterday and today/night, cleaned/removed the paint/rust from all 3 brake rotors, ready for painting. Cleaned and painted the swingarm as well.

BUT looks like I won't get to do any painting until late Sunday pm or even MONDAY...thanks to HERMINE!

Plans for this weekend's work schedule....perform the actual mechanical stuff...replace crankshaft seals, timing chain, rebuild rear MC and caliper, clean carbs. Finalize the frame....build/customize the battery box/fuse plate holder, make mount for TCI where tool box was, fabricate/weld the side cover mounting tangs. Mount NEW rear tire/ rim valves/ install self balancing beads, clean/prep and eventually paint wheel rims, and FRAME. Also fashion the engine mounts/ polyurethane inserts x 6!

I hope to be able to start assembling things this coming week and the following weekend along with customizing the wiring harness!

Wish me LUCK! Will post more photos as the build begins /gets to the rolling chassis and such!

Instead of using the self balancing beads, look at a product called "Ride On".

No, this isn't a new way of routing the exhaust, just couldn't figure any other way of sealing the exhaust ports while I used the pressure washer!

Found out some plastic bottles were an almost perfect fit to seal up the intake side!

Hit it with the pressure washer first, then used compressed air to dry it, then sprayed it with Degreaser cleanser, let it soak, and then pressure washed it again. Did SOME good, but that baked on grease/oil is just too much. I don't have a sand/media blaster, so looks like I'll have to attack it with a brass wire brush and my drill!

I'll be taking the valve cover, tranny cover, clutch cover, gear shift cover, timing cover off and cleaning them and then polishing them so that they will make a nice shiny contrast to the gloss black engine case I'll be painting totally black! But I'll be doing some accent color as well, hope it turns out okay!?

Like the subject, feel like I'm trying to eat an elephant....and how do you do that....one bite at a time!

Try oven cleaner. I used on some really grungy engines and other parts. Works pretty good, just have to let it sit for a while.

              Engine

              TC,

Get the engine as clean as you can and then spray paint it with aluminum (rattle can). No need to use clear. It will look new and original. No one has produced a cleaner "yet" that will perfectly remove 30+ years of deterioration.

TC if you want to use over cleaner, test it on a small area where the aluminum is exposed. If I remember correctly, it turns aluminum BLACK!

You might want to check with the manufacturer of your tires before using "RIDE ON" on any similar liquid balancing product.

All Pirelli tire warranties are VOID if liquid balancing products are used in their tires........

                          Hey Mike,

I appreciate it, but I'll be painting it BLACK as part of the black contrast to the bright Synergy Green parts...similar to the Camaro scheme. So...Skids, black after oven cleaner wouldn't be a bad thing anyways, but I think the gloss black will work and look okay after degunking as best I can.

Worked on cleaning the front MC and brake calipers, it's amazing how much time it takes just in the CLEANING process. Despite the Hurricane event, I'm thinking about going ahead and painting some of the smaller parts and then putting them on newspaper IN the climate controlled/dehumidified HOUSE environment to allow them to attain some level of dry/curing. Might even slip a few things into Swmbo's OVEN for a little while!

I'll be doing a bunch of shopping at the local hardware store for lots of nuts/bolts, stainless steel and chrome. Stay tuned....feeling the time pressure though!

                            Hi T.C.,

I do recall you stating that it was going to be black earlier. Putting the painted pieces inside is an excellent idea. I used SWMBOs dryer a while back to tumble a gas tank. She did not object - probably because she doesn't know. Shhhh.

                              TC,
I know you are pressed for time and may not have the option BUT if there is a FASTENAL Location near you (it would seem likely) they will have the higher grade fasteners not typically available at most hardware stores. The prices will be comparable. Unfortunately, they are 8-5 Mon-Fri so that may not be a good option being pressed for time...

Someone brought their airplane to a GA mech friend of mine. He had to tell the owner his airlane was totaled and would never fly again. The owner had been cleaning the airplane with Simple Green. It got under fayed surfaces and destroyed it. Watch what you lut on aluminum.
