I removed a oil cooler set up that was on this 79 XS 1100 Special basket case when I got it. I found a stock set up with the cover, bolt , spring and washer. I than purchased a Fram CH6002 oil filter...I put the bolt through the
cover, put on the spring than washer...than oil filter...My problem is my bolt bottom out before the cover seals to the engine...as if the bolt was to long or
something...What the Hey am I doing wrong ??????? Thanks

The bolt for the oil filter housing IS a special one having an o-ring groove. Not just a regular bolt will work. It is specificly made for that location.

I have a filter canister w/bolt on my toolbox at work and a digital caliper to measure it. I'll get those dimensions for you in the morning.

Meantime, take your replacement bolt by itself and screw it into the engine. Will it go all the way in as far as the bolt is threaded?

If not, check to be sure the threads in the engine case aren't boogered up.

Here's a pic of a canister with a OEM bolt. Only a couple threads stick up past the mating surface. Those 2 little tabs in the foreground on the cup go back towards the oil pan and fit up in there so the cup cant turn.

I'm not sure my cover is the same as the one in the above picture...Do
they differ with years & models between the XS11's ??? It could be just the
picture...? I wish I was better at loading pictures here...

                Oil filter

The two tabs mentioned on the filter can are most likely causing your problem. They go towards the rear of the engine and have to be clocked just right in order for the canister to mate properly with the block.

You still want me to measure that bolt or was the pic enough?

Well we me...it appears its never that simple...even with the tabs lined up...
this piece of crap cover still won't go on...I'm getting to the end of my rope
with this bike...The picture of the cover above looks a little deeper than mine
...I'm not sure if its the cover or the bolt...My phone ( iPhone 5 ) doesn't seem
to have any setting that makes the pictures smaller so i can post a picture...I
look below and didn't see a link below to attach a picture to this post...How do
I attach a picture once I figure out how to make them smaller...? I try using
the forum search bar...but that was a waste of time...it gave me everything but
                            how to post a picture...Crazy

                              I gotta ask

I gotta ask but I am sure you did not put the bolt that mounts the oil cooler back in?
