Clean it up as best you can with a wire brush or whatever works and go to Wally World and get a gallon can of carb/parts cleaner dip. About $20.
Remove the reservoir and soak the body of the M/C for 2 or 3 hours and it'll loosen that crud up. Repeat if necessary.
The parts cleaner is quite useful for cleaning up lots of stuff.
If your M/C (s) looks like that, the caliper(s) will also. And flush out the brake lines with spay brake cleaner.

Treat your present rear master parts with a lot of care until you can compare them to the new ones. You may still need them, I have ordered a set before to fit a LH and found the advertised kit did not fit.
When it comes to bleeding that brake system from empty you may want to try a windshield washer pump and some hose. I did it using those items and could circulate the brake fluid until there was no air in the system in a few short minutes. I posted it somewhere on here quite a while back. It worked slick as all get out.2-79 XS1100 SF

Cleaner
Put it in pot of boiling water after the reservor is removed. Boil it for about five minutes. Let cool rinse well then blow out with compressed air. Repeat until spotless.mack

Linked brake
Sorry , didn't see it was a midnight. I got rid the linked brake system on my Midnight. The idea just gives me the creeps. Tough to get parts and if the proportioning valve is not right the system will fail. Make sure you clean that valve very well. I've kept all the pieces from mine, if you need anything let me know. Think I still have the solid tube as well but I tried to paint it gold and turned out like crap.mack
