  • Diaphragm replacement

I'm replacing the diaphragms on another members carbs and since this is my first experience with it I thought I would ask anyone here that has done it a couple of questions I have about the instructions in the repair section here.

    1) It says nothing about it in the instructions but should some sort of glue be used to keep the slides from spinning inadvertently in the replacement diaphragms?

    2) In the closing statement of the instructions it states that to check for leaks to hold push the slide up and hold your thumb over the vent and the slide shouldn't drop by itself. That makes no sense because there is a hole in the slide. The slide will still drop but not as quickly.
That statement would be a little confusing to someone who doesn't fully understand how the slides work. Just sayin'.

Hey Greg- No glue necessary. If I remember right, those inserts are like a spanner, right? They just spin-on.

And, the second part holds true. That diaphragm should drop very little if your thumb is held over the bell intake port. But, then again, you're the one whom has taught me most of what I am already telling you . . .

      .
They stretch over the groove the OEM parts fit into and must be properly oriented to work correctly when installed. I was just wondering if anyone who has done it had an issue with them moving.

You have early carbs, these are only supposed to fit the late carbs. If you have a source for replacements for the early ones I WANT IT!!!!!

Those are the ones you used on your early carbs?

I used them on my Suzuki GS1000, which are the same carbs as the Yamaha XS1100.

The slides are different diameters on 78-79 and 80-81. The early slides are 28mm and the late ones are 29mm diameters.

                      I'm interested

in doing the same thing. I have both early and late carb slides that need diaphrams. Rasputin and I were going to do group buy to see if could get a better deal per unit. They are very expensive.
Greg if you get a good source for both that work will you post it the thread when your satified?

                        Diaphragms

I've used super glue on the ones I have replaced. No problems with any of them.

                          Hey Greg,

On the JBMIndustries site, they mention that the fitting "tire" section of the diaphragm is purposely made 1-2mm smaller than the slide...they are 25mm in diameter, because they are supposed to fit around and inside the slide groove where the OEM diaphragm sat.

So, take your calipers and measure the diameter of the groove of the slide, and as long as it's larger than 25mm, then the inexpensive ones will fit/work. And IF the inner groove is just 25mm, then their website also states the use of superglue will work to secure it to the slide so that the slide doesn't spin inside the diaphragm. I also thought MACK had fitted these to the early model carbs/slides a while back as well as posted a guide to it!?

I have a bunch of early slides that need them. Ian posted a source for the early (28mm slide) replacements, the ones I got are for the later (29mm slide). The ones I got were about $20 each and it looks like the others are about the same. Actually pretty cheap considering the alternative of buying a complete assembled slide from Mikes XS for $97 each and for the later carbs only.

I went ahead and put them on without any glue Mike. They seated down nice and snug in the groove in the slide. I can still turn them but not very easily. Time will tell.
I'll mark the slides on the airbox side so that they can be easily checked by just dropping the airbox down.
