Well... theres the problem right there

So today I drained the oil and started taking her apart. after getting the boot out of the way and taking all the bolts out I started to pull out the gearbox when I heard a noise and found this had fallen out.

Then I continued to try getting it out and blammo!

Not sure how I didn't realize this before but I'm prettttty sure those are supposed to be connected. After getting the gearbox out I inspected all the splines anyway.

All appears good to me. No abnormal wear patters really and all bearings are good. I got pretty lucky i was stopped when it happened. I only found two of the screws to hold it together. one was in the shaft housing itself and one was inside the swingarm. I'm gonna get in there good and clean it out and run through it with a magnet to be sure the other screws aren't in there. So if I find some bolts to fit i should be good.

Next up, bar swap and longer exhaust studs. then brakes and shocks.

        Gaskets

Some place on this site is a thread that has templates for all the gaskets. Go to napa or any other auto supply store and buy a sheet of gasket material and cut your own.
That clip is off the crank case breather hose.
The bolts for that connection at the u joint shouldn't be reused even if you find them in the dust boot. Buy new ones.
This wasn't a waste of time. All those spine connections needed to be cleaned and serviced anyway. Welcome to the club. Everytime you change rubber, make sure to take the time to redo the final drive both at the wheel and the swing arm connection.
One last point. There is no gasket at the swing arm/ final drive connection. You use a tube of gasket maker for that one.

          Thanks Mack

Hey I appreciate it Mack, the breather hose clip must've been down there a while, it never had one since I've owned it and I just put a cone on there a couple weeks ago. I definitely wasn't thinking of reusing the bolts no worries. I shouldn't have any trouble finding replacements at Ace. Now for some arts and crafts with the gasket material. Updates as I get closer to being done.

You really don't need a gasket. Yamabond or Threebond 1194 will work just fine.

Then I continued to try getting it out and blammo! .............glad to see you found the annoying cukprit to your initial problem posted.......that pinch clamp needs air and can;t escape to get to where it needs to be......good find. Also, those u-bolt flanges need grade 8 fine thread flange bolts and nut. Bolts need to have a shouldered section where they ride internal on the two u-joint flanges having no threads in that upper area..........that alone would have me closely looking and handleing PO's other assembly tactics.

MotoMan, like I said, I'd be going over that thing with a torque wrench and jaundiced eye before I ever rode it.

                    Brakes

XS1100 standard forks wear the same brakes as the XS650. That being said, there are shortcuts available for brake upgrades.

Here is one for a Brembo caliper upgrade: http://www.pandemoniumc2.com/?siid=3...egory=11951480
You'd be compatible with the 35 mm variety.

Also, if you go to 650Central.com, there is a good variety of brake rotors available.

                        Yamabond or gaskets?

So whats everyone's experience with yamabond? I've heard a lot of good about it but wanted some opinions on that since I'm waiting on a paycheck for this round of parts. I found a new old stock middle gear box gasket on ebay so I was thinking of yamabond on the cap due to not being able to find the gasket and being a tediousjob to cut a gasket when I could just squeeze a tube instead. Thanks guys! Hope I didn't just start a new topic here haha.

Middle drive gear housing cap. http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xs1100-h...1.html#results
Number 13 on the diagram. However I answered my own question and found all the gaskets I need and feel a lot more confident than using Yamabond.

The middle drive cap can be replaced with an oil pan plug from any parts house. As a matter of fact it makes it easier to R&R when yo need to check or change the fluid.

Just take the old one with to match up size and thread. A little longer won't hurt.

I'm talking about the cap on the side of the gearbox not the drain plug. Like I said though, I found a gasket online no worries.
