Looking for the approximate weight of the engine out of the frame I have to get one in my pick up and wanted to know about what I would be dealing with.
Thanks!

It's only a bit over a couple hundred pounds, but it's awkward as hell. If you have a friend and a couple metal poles, you can slip the poles through the front upper and rear motor mount holes. This will make it easier to load and unload and if you clamp the poles in place it will keep the motore from tipping over. The weight can be reduced though by removing the head, clutch basket, middle drive, starter, carbs and generator. Your wife or girl friend would then be able to easily assist in the lifting.

You'll need help unless trbig is there.

Actually BA80 IS really close. Motor and tranny being 280lbs. is STILL a narly heave.......of which I'll pass on lifting more than two inches. As Greg stated, unless your trbig.

Gordon,
I purchased an XS11 motor last week and it took three men to get it in the trunk of my car (a comparable height +/- to a pickup bed). I took some GOOD rope of about 1/2" diameter with me and ran it through the motor mounting holes front and rear (remove the rubber isolators) which provided very nice lifting handles There was really no good place to get a sure lifting grip on the motor without it..
That motor was every bit of 280# as motorman indicated. Take it from a guy that had back surgery.....Get the extra help!!!! Even if you have to slip the next door neighbor a $20 for 5 minutes of his time..... FIND THE EXTRA SET(s) of HANDS!!!
I was always told (Never weighed one) that it was only 225 pounds. I have joked in the past with my neighbor, who had a GSXR 1000 that my bike sitting there with the motor out still weighed what his complete bike weighs. lol.

Here’s the weight broken down, I used a digital and analog scale to determine the weight of each component to reduce error as much as possible. All measurements are imperial
Crankshaft -23
Clutch (complete)-8
Mid drive-11
Jugs- 14
Head (bare)-20
Upper/lower cases with shift drum , bearings and kick start mech. installed-39
Starter-4
Generator-6
Con-rods and psitons-4
Drive axel-5
Main axel-3
Primary shaft- 8
Middle driven gear and oil pump-3
Clutch cover and misc. parts- 4
Rotor-4
Hyvo and cam chain-2
Cams and valve train components-5
Bank of 78 carbs -6
Total weight here is approx. 170 lbs. This leaves 30 lbs for 4 quarts of fluid, cover fasteners, gaskets, shifter, timing cover and oil pan.
It seems heavier because of how awkward the weight distribution, and the difficulty in transferring the mass into the frame. I would rule against the rope through the motor mounts method of movement. Go with the hollow metal tubes through the motor mount holes. Use the lowers front and rear if possible to provide easy of lift and stability in the truck bed. Ropes hurt the hands and the motor will shift due to the weight distribution inequity. An easy two man job.

Weight seems to be in direct relation to how many people you have to help you. I know when my XS runs out of gas and I have to push it (rare occurrence thankfully), it instantly gains about 300 lbs.
Manage abilty is also directly inversely proportional to our age.
Agreed. 10 years ago the engines only weighed about 50 pounds.
