  • Exhaust/rear brake pedal

Ok so I put the exhaust on the E this morning only to find the rear brake pedal contacts the exhaust about half way to the pivot point. Checked the books and I have everything where it's supposed to be but it still makes contact. The return spring tips to the outside and pulls the actater sleeve inward.

    The end result is this:

So what is the secret handshake for the E rear brake system? I've considered several option like reversing the exhaust mounting gromets, but in my experience so far, if it doesn't fit easily, your doing it wrong. What am I missing?

The exhaust is pinned in exactly like it's supposed to be so I know it's not out of line, front to back. This stupid spring thing seems mickey mouse to me. I have it tucked under the foot rest bracket like it's supposed to be. To change it to one of the recesses inside the bracket compounds the angle and pulls the pivot point in farther.

Mack, IIRC the hook on the spring should be on the forward arm of the pedal pivot, not the rear like you have it. You're right, if it's 'correct' it goes right together but it's not obvious from looking at the parts. Also make sure you have the right spring; the standard/Special parts aren't the same but again, it's not all that obvious.

      Steve

I tried to reverse it but it will not work in that config. What I did is as per the books for an f. The E manual doesn't really show it. I've flipped the spring backwards, forwards, reversed it etc. But I always have to return to the sane proble,. It's really at the first inside coil that starts tipping the spring to the outside drawing the sleeve to the inside. Anyone got a picture of what works?

My E spring is hooked just like yours but clearly the pedal shaft is not protruding enough for the peddle pinch bolt to go thru.

The pedal should fit over the splined pivot shaft, and the pinch bolt should go in the groove on the pivot shaft. That will keep the spring from driving the shaft in. It looks like the same setup on my G.

            Finally

Well I finally got it working close to perfect. Still contacts the exhaust but only at the deepest part of the pedal down stroke. Once I get all the air out, it shouldn't need to plunge that far. Had to recurve the spring and put the lever on before installing the foot pedal bracket then install it as a one piece unit, which was quite a feet trying to fit the spring under and around the swing arm bearing casting. Good thing I always put the rear motor mount bolt in from the left side. Anyway thanx for the encouragement!

Sounds like you got it, but I took a couple pics on my '79F just for grins.

This is shooting from the bottom, looking straight up. The top of the pic is to the rear...

And this is shooting across the bottom from the left side.

I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
