    The Flooding continues

OK guys and girls for your reading entertainment this morning. To answer a few more of your questions. FIRE: I have a welder and cutting torch in the shop so I always have a few extinguishers. Do you guys always think a person to be be an idiot if one posses a question here regarding your collective EXPERIENCE. So yes as I've already stated I have run a pipe cleaner through the upper bowl vents. As I understand physics if one did have a plugged bowl vent this would cause a vacuum to develop in the bowl and rather than developing a flooding issue one would have a lean issue. If you disagree with that please explain your physics? Besides we are talking about flooding with the engine off (no vacuum). And to define gross flooding as in poring, just think of turning the petcock on with no fuel line POORING on the floor (this would be a gross amount of flooding as compared to moderate or minimal) (minimal as in an o-ring or T-fuel line leaking) (gross as in before taxes) MotoMan I have trimmed the gaskets. I have put the original pins back in. I have reset the fuel level to 23mm (I had progressively lowered them to 27 trying to get rid of the flooding). I have not yet received the new needle valves but I thought I would try cleaning the ones I had with 2,ooo grit sand paper to remove the little ring on them. I polished the inside of all the bowls as some had some factory casting flaws. I re cleaned the seat (still shining). Re set the float lower limit to just let needle open, so achieving the minimal float travel. Re checked float alignment (perfect). Ran the paper filters no dirt in carb. Not only have I blow through the fuel line with carb up side down and the right side up (working perfectly) I re- pressure tested them (not as pretty as some you have posted but it worked)( fuel tank sitting on picnic table (yes the picnic table in outside) , carbs on seat, clear plastic tubes running from all four bowls) came right up the lower edge of the bowls (yes all equal) and held for some time, no flooding! Put em back on the bike took her for a short ride = 1 OK 2 now flooding 3 no fuel in bowl 4 OK go figure. There is no point in instructing me re: Ya gotta sink it, setting the valves, finely tuned engines when fuel is running on the ground. Hope you enjoyed it. Bike is up for sale cheap anyone live near Seattle and want it.

BTW, no one here thinks your an idiot. Ignorance on their part, as they and I have no idea of your skill-sets, or lack of. I can say though that 'short-cutting' a THROUGH carb cleaning, as per our advice and not following our suggestions to a tee in steps(one change at a time) isn't helping yourself any.
Actually, my first inclination of lacking understanding of carb functions in general was lowering of float levels to compensate for flooding. That WILL in itself give bike SERIOUS running issues, even if everthing else is 'spot-on' perfect. No different than in the automotive carb world. Your carb issues are actually minscule to remedy with patience and following advice here. Trust me, the 'fold' here have specific skill-sets in areas that you would have never guessed......besides these ole scoots and their minor(to most here) glitches with fueling and pri./sec. ignition issues.

Guys, i spoke to Dave this morning on the old MNS. As Scott could attest to, when we had our get together at Detroit Lake, it was having the problem with not going over 5000 rpm, and no power on the hills. This flooding, and low rpm max, has been there since the bike had 10,000 miles on it. The carbs have been cleaned muliple times per the directions on this site. I have struggle with this for 3 years, and finally gave up, and sold the bike to Dave. He did solve the rpm problem, but this flooding problem is another demon in them. He does have plenty of skills in this area, but like me, gets real frustrated when a problem like this appears. I hope new needles help.

Oh come on Mack, don't be a quitter Generous offer for sure Dave. If the new Mikuni needles and seats don't do the trick for you, I'd ship the carbs to Mack, slap on his set that don't have issues, and then ride that bike 'til you forget all about the problems you had...which should happen as soon as you drop the hammer the first time! Don't sell it though, this is a great site with great people, and the LG you have is a nice bike.

Sorry, I was out picking lint off the dog again instead of following the forum; came back and found out that Dave's got your old Midnight.

                      Don't give up!

I've been beaten by a large man, a small woman and the IRS but I'll be darned if I would let a pile of parts beat me.

                        Lowering carb float levels

Well I certainly was not going to raise them from the 23 they were sat at. In my search for what could possibly be causing this issue I have read everything I could find on the web. My Clymer 78-81 says float lever should be 25.7 mm. I have seen seen recommendations from 23 to 27 so Motoman I don't think following suggestions on this would indicate that my knowledge is "in question". I certainly don't know everything especially when it comes to this animal but I'm no rube. And you assume I did not follow advice to clean the carbs and changed many things one at a time. Like i've said ad nosium I must have had these things off 40 times now. I'm actually getting pretty good at it. I can have them off in 5min now and about the same going the other way. Mack Thanks for the offer but I could not do that (to much pride I gues). But thanks anyway.

Turn down Mack's carbs? I don't get it... Fresh set of carbs for the cost of shipping? Don't let it be a pride thing, we look out for each other and it's the way we work here.

Motoman likes to use the CAPS key, and the "quotes", and I do have to set him straight once in a while, however he has a good base of knowledge about setting up carbs via the specs. But you have to get past the leaks first, and no matter what has been said or done, "SOMETHING" (there you go, Motoman...) is not right, and a second set of eyes only makes sense, don't you think?

You say it is for sale cheap in an earlier post. Where is the pride in selling the broken bike? Am I missing something?
Personally, I wish you would send the carbs to Mack, so Bonz and I could find out what the problem was.
