  • Scored a carb syn tool

Hi a friend at church gave me "something he thought I could use"! It is a 4 tube with balls sync tool. Messing around I put it on carb 4 and it went to half way up and sat there shuddering.

I want to warm the bike up (wife is napping lol) can I just hook it up and bring them all to match carb 3? Book says something like get 1 and 2 the same, 3-4 the same then take 1-2 to match 3-4.

3 is the one you sync to. Don't forget to adjust the idle mixture screws, then recheck the sync. It will have to bike running MUCH better once you do.

        carb sync

X2 with Ray...just make sure you don't screw the air mix screws down to tight...the tips will break off and its a muthah to fix!

          Hey, Jeff -

Are your carbs already clean inside?

If so ... when adjusting the idle mixture screws, start with 1.5 to 2 turns out from lightly seated.

Use that as a base starting point, and adjust to highest vacuum from there.

1.5 to 2 turns out is a somewhat lean starting point, but it seems to work well for most ...

IF the bike is already running, just start from there! Start from 1, or 4, and adjust the mixture for highest idle. Then move on to the next carb in line and repeat. Remember, just VERY SMALL adjustments, about 1/16 of a turn or less at a time.

              Idle Adjustment

I have an easy time syncing with vacuum gauges, but I can not get the idle speed or the vacuum gauges to respond when I adjust the idle screws. Nothing changes as I adjust the screws.

So for now, I am counting the turns as I back them out. IRRC, I think I put them at 1.5, or whatever was prevailing discussion here on CH11 for an SF.

I have been waiting and watching for a bolt of lightning (or the right thread) to enlighten me more.

Bike runs and idles great now,... just always like things to be tweaked to the best possible level.

              What am I missing?

You need a GOOD EAR, or a GOOD TACH to notice the difference. The vacuum gauge WILL show the difference, but you need to adjust slightly, wait for 15 seconds, look, and adjust again. Just a slower process.

                  what it showed

4 is pegged up. I turned the adjusting screw between 3-4 a half a turn tighter on clockwise and all it seemed to do was raise the idle.

                          got it to here

Seems better? I could turn the 4 screw and did indeed take it in about a turn, went to 1 and let it back a tad and this is were I am at. [IMG][/IMG]

maybe good idea to check calibration on your tool. I. E. check each line to the same vac source.

+1 on that! First thing is get three "Y" or "T" connectors, some extra tubing, and put all 4 to the same carb port, then verify they are all the same. After that, you KNOW it's correct. I do the same on my gauges about twice a year, as I only use them about 6 times a year lately.
