I could install new (longer) exhaust studs and use the new elongated nuts I bought, or use SHCS. Opinions?

Okey dokey. I'll head to Auto Zone in the morning and see what my options are. If not, Ace sells studs. Just want something longer, so I never have to fight with it again.1979 XS1100F

Hardware stores sell the studs and my experience is they are better the ones from auto stores seem to rust and seize and they only had kits when I was there. I suggest bestbuy or ACE hardware or the dealer. To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

The only issue I see is the stress it puts on the cylinder head threads everytime the exhaust comes off (for me, it comes off every year).1979 XS1100F

I have one xs11 standard with Jardine 4-1's and there is clearance only for a bolt rather than a stud and nut at one location. I didn't really much like it, but you are only mashing the crush washers and not bearing down with much torque.Skids (Sid Hansen)

I recently changed out my exhaust on my 79 Special from an old rusty 4 into 1 header to some nice new Mac 4 into 2 flare tip chrome pipes. Whoever had installed the header had used bolts and many washers to mount them to the head. They had been torqued so tight that the flanges were bending in. When I took them out I found that only about half an inch of thread was in the head. Lucky they hadn't stripped out. For the new exhaust I went to my local auto parts store and got new studs, nuts and lock washers. Like Crazy Steve says, much better. I screwed the studs into the head right to the bottom before mounting the exhaust.Graham in Surrey, B.C., Canada
