I trust Phil more than an eBay guy. He would know if that is what you needed.
Owned by a pair of XS11's. An 80 Standard and a 79 Special.

Yep Jonathan, that gear is not the one that goes bad on the countershaft, it may be a gear that is used on the main shaft, not removable without splitting the engine cases.

          Nope

That's the 5th pinion gear, not the coveted 5th 'wheel' gear on the countershaft.

            Yes...But...

That is a 5th gear for the XS1000...5th Gear Pinion according to the parts diagram...2H7-17151-00-00.

But it's not the gear that generally is bad...that would be 2H7-17251-00-00...the one that engages with the 2nd Gear (2H7-17221-00-00)

But, if you need that gear, it would be a good idea to but it now....

            Just a thought....

Wouldstalk, It was pointed out to me recently that if your shift drum for 2nd/5th is worn then the dremel fix will be temporary.

It's been said here before but bears repeating.... Make sure your shifting technique is right. These transmissions need a firm, FULL stroke of the lever to shift properly. Doing it with 'finesse' can result in the gear not fully engaging and it will pop out of gear. Yes, the trans will sound 'clunky' when you do this right, but that's the nature of the beast. Do it with finesse a few too many times and you're going into the trans...

There's a lot of these bikes that have never had any transmission issues, and a large number that have had 'the fix' with thousands of trouble-free miles since. Fred always says 'they shift like a Russian tractor' but what he means is you have to shift them like you really mean it....
