My highly customized 79 XS 1100 is not firing on the number 3 cyl.
The engine runs very rich and I have changed the spark plugs three times and they still coke up with soot.
I have spark and compression. Spark plug is firing. On number 3
Upon disassembling the carbs I find:
The air idle adj. is turned down to 1/2 turn out ( it should be 2.5 turns out ?)
Number 110 main jets, three pilot jets are the 2.2.2.2 style and the number 3 carbs jet is a 1.2.1.2 style and is older than the other three and plugged with debris.
Why would some use 110 vs 137.5 mains? and what style pilot jet is the correct
jet ( the 2.2.2.2 or the 1.2.1.2 )?
Answered your own question, 45pilots(BS30/96...1-2-1-2) and a good carb cleanin'.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
1-2-1-2 is the correct pilot jet. As to the main jets the 110 was in the late model carbs and the 137.5 was in the early model carbs.

Thanks Nate.
I found a package of (4) 1.2.1.2 on ebay for $8.95.
Wouldn't the 137.5 Jets be bigger than the 110's and by extension make the mixture more rich? I have an over richness problem now.
78-79 carbs function differently than 80-XJ carbs, also differences of metering rods, emulsion tubes, etc.

I guess that is way the 110 mains are there and someone replaced three of the wrong pilot jets with 2.2.2.2's.
I will leave the 110's in place and replace the 2.2.2.2's with 4 1.2.1.2's
That will be after I clean and blow out all the passages.

Might want to figure out for sure what carbs you are working with and not just assume that the 110's are correct.
