Is that setup there in your pic with the 17 or the 16?

Going back through looking at your older pics where you swapped wheels I see you have the standard inner spacer(at the wheel) and you hav it backwards. The part you have against the brake bracket is supposed to slip into the wheel seal and against the bearing race. The one you need for the special wheel is thicker on the outside.
It looks as though you have the special torque plate (the thin steel plate) on there. That shouldn't have worked on the 17" wheel. There should have been a spacer between that plate and the piece you have on backwards. The Special doesn't have the extra spacer there.
Look HERE and you can see.
I'll be sending both the torque plate and the correct inner spacer. Be sure and put the smaller end of the spacer towards the wheel. Is that seal there still OK or has it been ruined?Greg

I believe
you are correct on your missing #23 from the diagram and according to that site they are no longer available for purchase. Seems that lorax stated he got some parts off a bike in a salvage yard somewhere near you or him.
check with andreas or ebay or that salvage yard, but if it would be me I wouldn't run that wheel without that part. I believe you have just discovered the reason the first wheel failed so why take the chance ruining the second. Part should be easy enough to acquire and then you can do the job right.2 - 80 LGs bought one new

The #23 is there but it's the wrong one and it's installed backwards.
You are absolutely correct that it IS the reason the spline drive failed. That Standard rear wheel had to be wallowing around with the standard inner spacer, the Special torque plate, and the other spacer (which probably wouldn't go in there with the thicker Special torque plate on there) missing.
It had to be sliding in and out of the FD splines.Last edited by BA80; 07-30-2014, 06:14 PM.Greg

Could just be the wrong wheel hub cover. I have not worked with standard wheels so I can not definitively tell you other then looking a diagrams online. I do know how the 16 inch wheel needs to go on and the link in my last post gives you that.Last edited by cajun31; 07-30-2014, 06:24 PM.2 - 80 LGs bought one new

That is a Standard setup, for the 17" wheel. See the extra spacer and the thin inner spacer? The extra spacer is in the wrong place as installed on that axle but it's there.
The special doesn't have that.Greg

I do not think
you have the right wheel seal cover. I think you are trying to use the one for a standard, which was on the other wheel that you state you removed, on the 16 inch you are now working with. You are mixing parts and assemblies. If you are dealing with a 16 inch wheel now you need to stick with the axle assembly for that wheel and the spacing will be right and the rotor will quit rubbing. I would acquire the right parts from whatever source you decide to ensure you don't end up with a repeat of the original problem. Just my 2 cents.2 - 80 LGs bought one new

that cover
that you have on there right now has a lip on it, correct? It goes on there and fits around the seal, correct? Now if you were to reverse it does it seem to fit to you or not? Been a while since I put mine back on, but it seems that cover would only go on one way, that is if you have the right one. Look back at the pics I posted of my assembly. From the looks of your first posted pics of yours that cover and you have is different then mine.2 - 80 LGs bought one new
