Going back through looking at your older pics where you swapped wheels I see you have the standard inner spacer(at the wheel) and you hav it backwards. The part you have against the brake bracket is supposed to slip into the wheel seal and against the bearing race. The one you need for the special wheel is thicker on the outside.

It looks as though you have the special torque plate (the thin steel plate) on there. That shouldn't have worked on the 17" wheel. There should have been a spacer between that plate and the piece you have on backwards. The Special doesn't have the extra spacer there.

Look HERE and you can see.

I'll be sending both the torque plate and the correct inner spacer. Be sure and put the smaller end of the spacer towards the wheel. Is that seal there still OK or has it been ruined?

guessed, the wheel assy configuration is different from 16-17 inch. So what are you actually looking to do here. I'm confused a bit but can give you videos on either or. Tell me what you need?

Well, I'm trying to reassemble the rear wheel, hub, final drive, etc. and I've found that I cannot do so without the brake dragging on the rotor.

It's a Special. The wheel the original owner had on it was a 17", but he also gave me a 16". I put the 16" on seeing as it has a fresh tire on it, and a working wheel hub (splines are good). I thought I was missing a spacer, since the 17" and 16" have different parts, but I'm unsure. Most of what I've read said that the 16" wheel on a Special should not need an extra spacer. I currently have (as seen in the pictures) the dust hub/spacer thing, the brake bracket, and the other bracket attached to the brake. Stumped. Wondering whether the owner modified the rear wheel setup or whether perhaps his running the 17" without that spacer is what caused the final drive/wheel hub issue in the first place. Regardless, I need to fix this 16" wheel to the bike.

Why are you putting the 16" wheel on, you have a standard, and you'll end up with running a bit higher revs for the same highway speed if you use the 16" wheel. As I stated, you just need to UNBOLT the hub assembly from both wheels, and put the good hub onto the 17" wheel, and then you'll have the correct spacers and caliper bracket so things will fit right and won't rub!

That being said, the 16" gives you a few more choices for tires, and widths, and will also make getting "Off the line" a little easier, and will let the bike sit a little lower if you have a short inseam!

Do you think, if I found the dimensions (particularly, width) of that spacer, I could throw on a few from the hardware store that would match it until I get a replacement? A stopgap for, say, a week or so?

Actually, I have a Special. The previous owner modified it to accept a Standard tank.

I actually wanted to keep the 17" wheel, honestly, but the tire is shot. I figured I'd rather get it riding and use the good tire which came on the 16" wheel than let it go to waste. I'll get a 17" tire and switch the hub out this winter.

I'm about 6'5" so I do prefer the 17" as far as comfort and aesthetics go.

I'll have to find a spacer for it before I ride, I guess.

True TC but the rear tire choices are VASTLY greater with the 16". To make the gear ratio the same the 750/850 FD swap will take care of that.

Yup.......ouch!.....wrong or the wider spacer wheel side is missin, along with the spacer between the caliper stop bracket and swingarm being incorrect.
As cajun31 suggested, your gonna end up with matching wheel hubs unless corrected.
