I guess the issue I have with it is that it's only on one side. It's really comforting hearing that sewing machine of a valvetrain when it's cold but hearing ticking only on one side of the engine is frustrating that's all.

      Ticking

The head gasket is brand spanking new and there are no signs of leaking anywhere so it was just a coincidence that made me think that.

My clearance on the number #3 exhaust lifter is too high and I knew that putting it back together. I just didn't expect it to make that much noise. The clearance is at .12 when it should be .8 - .10 so I guess it's my fault for hoping it'd be fine. Is there any potential harm that can come to the lifter or cam with it being out of spec that little bit? I know these valves beat themselves into the head so theoretically it should go away with time.
Let's go over these posted lash numbers. When you say .8 -.10, that actually would be .008" - .010". And .12 would be .012". If your lash on that valve or any other valve is only .002" out of spec, you will not hear it.

You would hear a lash ticking noise at say .010"+ over the spec. Example: If you mistakenly set the lash at .020" instead of .010", you would hear it - all the time.

As mentioned, the XS1100 valve train is a bit noisy, but I do not think that you are hearing a valve noise. JMHO
