    Probably EXACTLY wehat happened... haha

I also think I need to adjust my valves as I have a feeling they might be sticking, and thus giving me some of my popping.

The problem is, these have those shim things... and dont you need like a boat load of a selection to adjust the valves properly? Like don't you take the measurement, then dependent on what it is, read off a chart what size to put in, and it could more than likely be different for each valve...?
And aren't those shimms hard to find!?? haha

I know, I definitely need to get THIS right?

Dylano, sounds like you've found a major problem to the performance, yep, the bike won't run right without fuel! Now, with the pilot screw 7 turns out, as has been stated in previous posts that once you're over 3-4 turns out, it's time to go up in jet size. Now that the carbs can get and KEEP a consistent fuel level, you'll probably find you'll be able to start having success in your tuning efforts....keep at it!

        T.C.
That's what I thought! BUT i put THREE over pilots in and the pilot screws STILL had to be turned out like 4-5 turns?! Any ideas?

        • Have you synced them yet Dylan? With gauges I mean.

You'll need one of THESE and most XJers just leave them in.

I posted a link to that same thing on the last page!
No I haven't synced them yet.
I will buy that tool soon, and hopefully my jets will all be here soon too, even though they STILL haven't sent me tracking info or anything ):

What are the up's and down's to leaving that tool in vs taking it out?

Also what do you think about that last post I made, responding to the persona saying I need bigger pilots?

I know I need to vacuum sync them, but I feel as if my bench sync was pretty effective... I did you gauge pins, and got them all to the same slip fit, all through the throttle range too.

Does anyone have the specs of that yics tool?
I could whip that up pretty easily on the lathe if I had dimensions,

                • The shims are 29mm. Yamaha, Kawasaki, and BMW all take the same shims.

You can get a small assortment on fleabay pretty cheap or individually from one of the MC dealers I listed.

                  HOME MADE YICS TOOL INSRUCTIONS

Seems $40 is pretty cheap for plug and play though.

Since seeing you use that word 'sticking valves' in a couple threads now, just wanted to let you know that is NOT what happens having the wrong heat expansion clearances. Too much clearance, valve doesn't lift enough and is late doing so. Too tight and won't seat tight eventually leads to burnt valve.

I'm aware that they aren't actually sticking as in remaining stationary, I mean more like sticking as in staying open, and not closing all the way. (: I agree it is a terrible term though.

                          • Valve clearance is as follows:

                            (Inches)
                            (SUPPOSED TO BE .008"-.010")
                            Exhaust:
                            1. .006"
                            2. .008"
                            3. .007"
                            4. .007"
                            (SUPPOSED TO BE .004-.006")
                            Intake:
                            1. .005"
                            2. .004"
                            3. .004"
                            4. .002"

NOW, those clearance gaps SHOULD get bigger with time due to wear, correct? OR do they get tighter for some reason like my diesel?!
                            That has always confused me...

                            Basically what I'm asking is:
Should I buy smaller shims to make the gaps bigger?
(on the ones that are at the bottom of, but in, tolerance)
and should I mainly worry about the ones that are over tolerance?

Still not sticking.......to tight and not sealing properly.

The clearance DIMINISHES(get tighter). Set clearances at upper end of specs.
