  • If I go into throttle REALLY slow, it would raise rpm's to about 4k then stumble.

OH and I just went and tried them at 2 cause I skipped that before... bike started only with choke (bike still pretty warm) then idled ok then just died all of a sudden... now it won't start at all..... WTF haha

    • Make sure those 3 tiny holes behind the throttle plates on the top of the venturi are clean, clear and flowing and check your diaphragms for holes ( pinholes around the outer edge) and be sure they are seated in the groove under the cap where they are supposed to be.

But GET THE RIGHT JETS IN THERE!!!!!!!

      • Also I'd like to know more about the pickup coils someone was referring to earlier.. I know where it is, I just don't know how to tell if anything is wrong.

I checked my diaphragms last week, and they looked good, I looked at them close up to a light bulb too.

Waiting on all new jets too.

              • There generally isn't a problem with the pickup coil wires on an XJ because there is no vacuum advance and the wires stay stationary.

Do you have a vacuum line running from the nipple on the #2 carb, not the boot the carb, to the ignition vacuum sensor?

I'm from Oklahoma and that's close enough to Missouri that you need to show me. How about a picture. I can imagine all kinds of things.

                  • Hey Dylano*,

Over a year ago I had stored my bike and forgotten to put Sea Foam in the tank/carbs, and they got gummed up. Bike would start but any attempts at giving it throttle only killed it. It wasn't getting enough fuel. Pulled and cleaned the carbs, and back to good as new. I'm not saying that you need to clean the carbs, just that the symptoms still seems like you're not getting enough fuel.

The Pickup coils info is in the tech tips, I just saw your request for this, and the way Greg is posting, he'll probably post the link to it before I get done with my reply! But just in case, here's the link:
                    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543

Anyways, addressing your non-starting bike now, if all you were able to do is get it IDLE and not get the RPMS above 2500, you have been DRAINING your battery, the charging circuit doesn't kick in well until ~2500 rpm or above, and so just idling, along with the repeated strains of STARTING the bike most likely weakened the battery just enough to drop it below the ~10.5 V threshold that is needed to activate the ignition system, and no start. You can test this by just jumping it with your car battery, if it then starts, then you need to put the battery on a charger for while....and while you wait, CLEAN The carbs!

It will look different because there is no vacuum or centrifugal advance on the XJ. It's all done electronically by the TCI. But, there is a vacuum sensor that needs to be hooked up. On this XV Virago I'm working on it's right by the coils and it's called a load sensor. I honestly don't know WHERE it is on an XJ but someone here does.

                      • Got the bike to start by putting petcocks to PRIME, instead of ON, and the fuel filters were full before I did this, and when I switched it to prime I was the ilters empty into the carbs and fill again...

                        the bike started but NOW
only the right side is firing, I'm getting COLD exhaust air out of the left bank.....

what is hooked up to the number 2 carb is called a BOOST SENSOR it says right on it

That's right, BOOST SENSOR. It has vacuum line and a 3 wire plug to it?
