That is WONDERFUL information to have! No wonder they are easier to find than the non bleed... -_- do you happen to also know the exact stock jet sizes for the 82 xj? That way I can order one size up from that...Have:

BTW, the difference in main jetting on the XJ and 80-81Specials(110's across all four) is dictated by metering rod differences. 80-81Standards used even different metering rods, so main jetting was different even yet. 78-79model carbies were all the same for all models(only two), but also fed from both pilot and main circuit thru ALL rpm ranges, which seems to allow a bit more error and ease of tuning. The later carbs seem to be a bit more fiddley with circuits seperated more. Either way, patience, persistance, listening to experience here and not trying to re-invent the wheel is key.....grasshopper.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Although knowing the mains for sure is helpfull as well thank you!
If someone KNOWS for sure the stock pilot jet size and also thinks that only going 1 size above that is good for pod filters AND open headers, let me know!
THANKS!!!
You guys are awesome.
I didn't expect so much info so fast.
This is only the second forum I've ever joined (strange for a 5 year comp. tech.)
The other one was a Yamaha FZR forum!
I've usually always found any answers I need from just browsing various forums.Have:

OH MORE INFO!
The reason, I personally dont think that only one size over stock on pilot jets is going to cut it is because:
1. when I had smaller jets than I do now, pilot fuel screw had to be out 5-6 turns to run ok (stopped and revv'd)
2. with current jets, pilot fuel screw still had to be out 4 turns to run ok (stopped and revv'd)
3. with current pilot jets screwed down to 1 turn out, the bike doesnt even want to start.
To ME that means I need even BIGGER pilots... but I am not very knowledgeable with motorcycle carbs, as these are actually the first I've really messed with!Last edited by Dylano*; 05-06-2014, 06:18 PM.Have:

THESE are the jets currently in the bike, 2-2-2-2 pattern, they SAY they are mikuni, are they imposters?! haha

But you must remember, the MAINS are part of the equation. IF they are too small, then you could try going up in the pilots. I think that is the problem you are having now. Go up 2 sizes the mains, re-check the floats levels(with a tube on each carb, with the carbs level in a vise), and start with the screws out at 1 1/2 turns.
I almost always start with the idle set a little high so it will not stall when doing the first adjustments. as it gets a little better, you turn the idle down and keep going. For a "new" set of carbs, it can take two to three hours to get them dialed in.Ray Matteis

Ray, the mains don't even enter into the equation at idle.Greg
