  • Looking to buy 1978

Due to circumstances I had to get rid of my 1980 Special. But lately I have gotten the bug and have been looking for another XS11. I came across a 1978 that looks pretty rough but has bags and a fairing. I spoke with the owner and he said he bought off an elderly gentleman last fall with plans to work on it this spring, however he bought another bike and wants to get rid of this one. Here's the odd part, the elderly man said he was tired of charging the small motorcycle batteries so he ran some cable to one of the side bags and hooked it up to a regular size car battery. The owner says now the motor will turn over and act like it wants to fire but wont and he believes hooking up the car battery fried the stator. So what do you gentlemen think? Could the car battery have fried the stator and how much of a deal is it to find another and change it? I am hoping he left the original cables and I can go back to the original size battery and gain use of that bag also. Thought, comments and suggestions welcomed.

Car battery is 12v also, it won't hurt the charging system a bit. There is another issue........carbs.........ignition......

If he had to charge the battery all the time the charging system may have been FUBAR to start with.

I don't think you can go wrong if you get it for the right price.

Hoping to look at it today, he is asking $650. I really dont have time for a big project so I am hoping it will be minor fixes that i can get by with for awhile and at some point do a better restore. Anything I should look for as red flags?

If he is asking $650 for a bike that isn't running, show up with cash and try to buy it for half that. That only thing that worries me is your lack of time. You're going to have to fix it yourself.

          You have charging issue.

You need to give attention to the brakes, even if you only replace the fluid.

You have to clean up the electrics.

The carburetors are likely neglected, or certainly in need of tune.

If you can bring this thing home for $500 or less, you can pass it on without getting hurt if you find you can't handle it.

There is more out there. I'm actually really surprised how many keep popping up on CL. I do know where one is stored away if I ever want another.

Well I didn't get a chance to stop by today. I did ask about his price and he said for $500 it's mine. Here's the ad. My time isn't that pressing I just don't want to have to get into a major overhaul this summer.

Ok, I will heading over tomorrow evening and bringing it home. Pics and update to follow. LOL, it seems to be raining XS's, there is also a 1981 Venturer not far from where I am. It has had a few changes but looks pretty close to original, he's just asking more than I have to spend right now. I do however have a Cub Loboy for sale and if he still has it after I sell it I believe that will be coming home also.

The 78 will run circles around the 81. You can always put the Venturer tank on the E. Direct fit.

Wow, bike hasn't been registered in over 16 years. I hope he at-least transferred the title if he*bought it from someone in Michigan. Or, maybe he's the title holder. Looks nice.

It can always be retitled as salvage. It is after all 37 years old.

Luckily in Maine no title is required if the vehicle is over 15 years old. All I need is a bill of sell.

So I brought it home tonight. Outwardly it looks to be in good condition, it seems to have been kept under storage. The PO said the old man he got it from had it in his barn. We hooked a battery up to it and tried to start it, it would turn over but not fire, the PO said last fall when he first got it, it would fire up but not stay running. There is a leak from the left side petcock and the gas was actually an odd yellow color. Even still I think it will be a great bike when it is up and running, the fairing, bags and trunk are all in great shape. Seat has one small tear but overall in good shape. Came with a tool box with some extra parts and a complete spare carburetor. I have to work the next two days but then my kelly comes up and I have five days off, so I plan to spend a good deal of time and hopefully have it running before I head back to work next week. Here's a few pics.

                              Extra carbs

                              Some extras

                              Cruise control

Battery hooks to these cables and sits in the right side bag.

Nice clean trunk. All the weather strip on trunk and bags in great shape.

Need to replace these for sure.

Tool kit. Even the pliers have Yamaha stamped on them.

This was in the tool kit bag. Any one know what it is??
