Looking to buy 1978

Found a local guy who will clean my tank for $40-$75, depending how many times he has to run it through the process. After taking he petcocks out its clear that the screens need replacing. I noticed in the Clymers it said my petcock should have two ports that connect to the "octy" but it only has one port on the bottom. But I noticed today that on the back of the petcock there is a second port that runs horizontal. Should some thing be connected to that? After taking the tank off there was a hose that was in a bracket under th tank and ran down to the top of what I would assume to be the transmission. Was this supposed to "T" off and connect to the petcocks? It seems to be in the right area for that.

You have a standard. They have a single fuel line on the petcocks. The horizontal line is a vacuum line because the petcocks are vaccum opperated. The standards also do not and should not have the octy.

That line at the back of the tank is a drain line from the recessed gas filler area. It is supposes to be open all the way to the ground. It should bot be hooked up to anything other than the nipple on the back of the tank.

Yeah, if that hose is not long enough, get another one and make sure it does go all the way down. Should meet-up with the crankcase oil hose and the battery drain hose.

Also while on the subject of the petcock screens, mine are toast, any idea where I can get replacements? And it would appear that my intake manifolds are ok, just crappy looking on the outside.









So once I get it up and running do you think some seafoam in the tank would clean up that junk in the backgound?

You can get a set of petcocks off ebay pretty cheap sometimes. Otherwise I don't think you can get screens separately.

If nothing else, just run what you have with a couple of inline filters. I run those anyway.

Oh crap, really? I thought that was the crankcase vent hose!!! I was hoping when I over-filled my bike with oil, that that is where all that oil came from.

The larger hose that goes to the air box is the crank case breather.

I tell ya, Vancouver is murder for house and motorcycle prices. There are some deals to be had but you have to be glued to Craigslist and have your horse saddled and waiting under your window.
