  • Swingarm center -swingarm bearings

Since I had to replace the tire, I thought I had best service everything while there. Since I don't have new seals, I simply checked the swingarm bearings, making sure they turn smoothly.

Replacing the swingarm, I got it centered. Here is where I got my measurements.

I have about 7 mm on each side.

The right side shaft pivot #5 is screwed in so far that the lock nut #6 won't thread all the way down. On the left, it's way out.

OK, what gives? There is no other place I can get a measurement.

Yes. I'll drop it again and make sure it didn't fall out.

The swingarm bearing seals pop out very easily and can be reused after greasing the bearings. They are not a very tight fit.

I found it more accurate to measure the gap looking in from the rear of the bike at the bottom of the swing arm.

You'll have to loosen the right side and tighten the left to balance the useable adjustment first then center it.

I can't get a measurement from the bottom on the right side. It's obstructed. I think the brake pedal stuff is under there.

You can also use a feeler gauge to get it centered. IIRC it usually ends up about .050" or so on each side.

Edit: Don't forget about the misprint in the service manual, correct torque is 47 inch lbs. on the allen bolts.

Yes, you are correct, I had all those parts off when I did mine.

Down on the bottom where I might get a feeler gauge, the casting, (or whatever it is) appears to be rather irregular. I'm in the neighborhood of 7mm on each side. I'll see what I can do with the feeler gauge.

THAT may well be the issue. Made the same error myself Marty.

OK, I'll give it another try here shortly. A fresh look has sorted many an issue.

I had it centered when I quit last night, but I don't know how the pins are located.

It takes several more turns to get 47 ft lbs than 47 inch pounds though.

It's back together. The swingarm is centered according to the photo in my first post. The bearings are packed with grease. The pins are torqued in inch pounds. There's a new tire on there as well.

There's a rub. The pin on the right side is in so far that it doesn't thread all the way through the lock nut. I am not happy with that.

How many threads are showing beyond the lock nut on the left side? Basically, is one side THAT much different than the other?
