With the plug unplugged then you'll get NO voltage to the field coil and no output from the alternator. So, yes, reconnect it back up, ground out the green wire and try again. That should give you max voltage to the field coil and give you a fairly large output on the alt.
I agree with Steve, this is okay for testing, but I wouldn't leave it like that for too long.

        mixed test results

Well, passed a few tests and failed a few.
Passed:1. drill bit stuck like glue to alt. cover. 2. checked plug behind fusebox, got no reading from brown or green wire to ground when unplugged. 3. coil disconnected and key off, checked brown wire at regulator plug to ground, no reading, so app. no short there.

Failed: 1. ohms test on field coil terminals. ohms 5.9, I think should be no more than 3.5. 2. checked brown field coil wire with key on. Voltage was 9.86 and should have been 12 volts, I think. Green wire checked in at 1.12.
Any ideas or tests u know of greatly appreciated. Thanks

I rode my bike with the green wire jumped for 3 months that way due to a bad regulator, didn't burn any bulbs out but I had to refill my battery every 500 miles though. I wouldn't reccomend doing this, it's just for testing purposes.

So Replace regulator/rectifier. This is the two screw one under the fuel tank, correct? Does everyone agree that it seems to be the problem? Thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated

                  found melted plug

Took off tank and found stator (the three white, red and black) female end plug coming from the regulator/rectifier had melted through at the red wire. The male end side looks not exactly beautiful either. Should I replace regulator or look for other problem. E/thing worked fine until smal accident and wondering if that did that, Thanks

I'd try repairing the connections first and see if the charging system works. Then if it works, you can splice in a new connector.

I'll do that first. It was still showing good readings with the FSM manual tests. Just wasn't sure if safe to do. Just find new plug harnesses and put together. Think that might work. Thanks for info.

Definately want new connectors, not just splice and tape, correct?

Yes, if the regulator works, then put new connectors, until then I would just connect them together temporarily (splice/tape). If it works, you could also hard wire/splice with butt connectors, that will be fine for now but a pain to deal with later.
