Its not a dumb question, it's a question I asked myself a few times, the tubes are on correctly, I took the carbs off and installed them on the airbox outside the bike to be sure of the orientation.
On a side note, the generosity of this site is awesome (aside the helpful info), the member I purchased the tubes from originally saw this post and is sending me another set, and I received an offer from another that said he had some spare airbox parts that he isn't using if I needed. Some real stand up guys on this board and I appreciate the help whole heatedly.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to share with you a way to soften up old rubber such as the car boots and air box boots. What I do is I take some Xylol (which is like paint thinner) and some wintergreen oil. You mix a bit of wintergreen oil with the Xylol and soak your rubber parts. In a couple hours your rubber parts will be soft and plyable and smell like a breath mint. Don't however leave the parts in too long because they will swell. If that happens let them sit a couple of days and they will go back to normal. Just a helpful hint.

Is Xylol the brand name for a chemical called Xylene, by any chance?
