    Has anyone use regular nuts, on their exhaust studs, instead of the OEM Type?
    if so are there any drawbacks, or advantages, 2 using a regular nut

    The photobucket link you have here says you have either moved or deleted the photo. I was looking to see what head pipes and flanges you had.

    I had the 2-1 Mac I think it is ( closest I could find ) it had the flat flanges bolted up to the engine with the original allen head bolts on it ( rusted and ugly ). I went to Ace and bought domed chrome acorn nuts for it, real nice. When I wanted to put the stock head pipes back on so as to use my center stand, I did not have a thin walled socket thin enough to fit between the nuts and the edge of the relief in the stock flanges. So I cleaned up the old rusty allen head bolts, sprayed them with chrome paint and used them. Good thing I save everything at least a little while. Still looking for something to replace them with that will fit, hopefully chrome ?

      I had to use a regular nut on each bike that has 4-into 1 Jardine headers where the down tube interfere with an allen wrench or socket. In fact, an open end or box wrench works best on a regular nut there.

        Regular nuts work just fine, zinc plated that is.

          thanks guys

          I will get some tomorrow, so i can finish my front exhaust. What is the easiest way to get the old rusty ones off, and do you i. need new exhaust gaskets since i am taking the exhaust completly off.

            if the exhaust flanges are flat plates any regular hex nuts will work.
            If they are finned forgings there ain't any clearance between the hole the nut goes into and the nut hexagon so you can't do the bastards up and you are stuck using those Allen key drive nuts. Yamaha still stocks them, ~$40 will buy you all eight.
            If you have a bro with lathe he can turn up a set of pillar nuts.
            If you have a bro with an aircraft specialty fastener catalog he can look up flanged reduced bi-hexagon nuts.
            Betcha either of these options will cost you more than buying the Yamanuts.

              I went a different route with mine. On the SH I had an issue with alot of the nuts being so rusted to the studs they would not come off, and they were stripped on top of it. Most of them pulled the stud out of the block instead of the nut off the stud.

              so I took out all the studs and used allen head cap screws. Worked for me anyway.

                On standard XS11 exhaust flanges I used these and turned down one half so it'd fit into the counterbore of the flange, you could easily file off half way up the hex corners if you ain't got a lathe, and $2 for 10 they're cheeaaap!

                Search for M8 connector nut

                I used stainless, not so cheap but still waaaay cheaper than Yamahaha nuts.

                I also have some of these furniture type nuts in M8 to try but they are a bit thin on the wall, the ones I have were given to me to try, they're stainless too so the top flange can be turned off, maybe some decent washers would stop them trying to pull through the flange holes

                  John, If you do go replacing them, get metric ones, not standard.
                  Wish you would have said something to me about it last weekend.

                  I bought one of these from Boats.net last year.




                  $1.49 each and if your order is less than $10 then shipping is only $1.75.

                  So let's do the math, $1.49 times 8 is $11.92, which is over the $10 limit, so split it up into 2 orders, 6 in the first order for $8.94 and then 2 more for $2.98. On the second order, you can find something for about $7 and still get the order under $10.

                  If the order is above $10 then shipping jumps to $6.95

                          Didn't mean to confuse anyone. Of course all our bikes are metric.
                          I was refering to those bikes that the POs have put standard (SAE/non metric) fasteners on there and totally buggered up the studs.

                            If you have an Octy-Acetelene torch, heat the nuts up prior to removing them. They will come right off. You will need new exhaust gaskets. Use some anti-seize (high temp) on the stud threads upon installation of new nuts. Retighten new nuts a couple of times after you ride the bike making sure that they are staying tight.

                              If anyone needs new studs, I've got about 7 or so that I accidently bought too many of. I'll gladly drop some in an envelope if anyone needs one or 2 or 3.
