  • Good (cheaper) source for float needles

Trying to keep costs down for my carb customers and noticed that the damn float needles (80's) seem like they are more expensive every time I go to buy them. Was wondering if anyone had found any good sources (like the boats.net shaft seals). Right now it is looking like Mikes is the cheapest at $5 ea. TIA, Jessie

Don't know. YAM site only lists it as a set.

            Jessie,

Is it just an old wives tale that you need to replace the needle and the seat together?

The viton tip needles can be replaced without replacing the seat, if the seat is still in good condition. If you have the brass needles and seats, it's best to replace both. You CAN "clean up" the seat, but you need to know what you are trying to do, and have the proper, fine grit paper/stone to do it. JMHO

I have cleaned the seats before using Eagle 1 on a Qtip. It worked for me. You do need to be sure that you leave no fibers. Maybe this could affect the float "height" adjustment if you got too agressive and enlarged the hole a bit, I don't know. It also works well for the seat in the standard petcocks.

I can't even remove my seats, any suggestions? I'm going to replace them with he needles. The cheapest I can find is Mikes XS as well.

Yeah I had that problem too, the seats on my spare carbs were coroded and had some pits it wouldn't come out. I just grabbed them with a pliers and squeezed and twisted. I crushed them but they came out.

Yeah, but you indicated cheap and free is even better.

If I could find free I would be ok with that, but cheap is acceptable as well!

Yep, those are cheap because they are brass needles for early 11's. Again this is for the 80's carbs. I appreciate all the help.

Why bother looking for seats? Why not just make the investment and go XV920's? Then, you too will only need to replace needles in the future (still cheaper).
