  • Gasket

When I took the jugs off the upper case, I noticed the gasket was pretty thick in comparison with else where on the motor. Anyone know what the spec was on this gasket. I have an old set around here someplace but I don't remember it being any thicker than any of the others. Seems to me to be a fairly important detail.

Don't even need a gasket between the jugs and case. Use anaerobic gasket maker and be done.

The original gasket and the supplied one in the Yamaha kits are thinner than the side cover gaskets. Its like double thickness paper and tuff not as compressable as the side cover gaskets. Now when people mill down the heads and there is not enough clearance between pistons valves and head then a thicker gasket needs to be used somewhere to get proper clearance. It's a lot easier to put a thick gasket between juggs and engine than to find a head gasket that is thicker. A thick gasket does not guarentee the head has been milled its just something to look for.

I agree that putting down a coat of anaerobic gasket maker will seal it but suggest that you also use the O rings they go a long way in preventing leaks. For god sake do not use something like Indian head gasket sealer cause you will have a **** of a time ever getting it appart.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

        I doubt this

head has been milled. The first owner was a chick and she only put a 3K on it. The second was a guy who didn't even know there was a kick start lever under the battery bracket and was using a set of vice grips instead. I have a sheet of "Fel-Pro" Rubber fiber 1/16 inch thick, that I'm going to use for the middle drive gear housing gasket. But I'm thinking it might be too thick for the jug, upper case location.

I checked deck height on my motor before removing the jugs for the first time and it measured only .005" at the edge of the piston.

Also, a stock head gasket after it is compressed should be around .050". So if your head is milled and you are putting everything back together you might want to double check piston to valve clearances after you torque the head down.

Don't think I would use rubber fiber here.

Unless some mods, as others here have mentioned, have been done, I would just spend the $20 or so and go OEM like this one

FOUND IT. second place I looked so no need to tidy the shelf
2 inches of snow and temps dropping so no incentive to stay in the unheated garage. Put the battery tender on the bike.
Let me know when you are through this way or do i need to mail it?.
