Let's see, a Canadian gallon is 1.2 US gallons, so the ratio is 1 to 1.2, so 40 mpg is to one, as X is to 1.2. Solving for X, not rounding to least significant digit, we get 48, and we will allow a fisherman's fudge factor for the 70 MPH. (Might the eyes be tricked into thinking that KPH looks like MPH?)

Nice job with the stoichiometric flux capacitor measuring device, dibs on it next. They sell them at Harbor Freight?
On a serious note, do you boys that do the fuel measuring method measure to see if your floats are true to begin with? I set mine last weekend on the 1980 G model I am rehabbing with the stoichiometric flux capacitor measuring device and checked each side of the float and 1 float and needed to be adjusted a decent amount to bring each side to the same reading.Howard

Still here
Nope, not scared away!. Just busy working. Doesn't it suck when work gets in the way of real life??
Man....did I touch a nerve here, or what?
I appreciate all the input. I certainly wasn't looking to start an e-argument, just looking for a fitting.
I have done the measuring, but always wanted to know the actual fuel level anyway. Call it curiosity.
I will go tomorrow and grab some grease fittings.
Thanks guys.
Ride well
PS
Do I have to buy motorcycle oil, or is it OK to just use what I put in SHMBO's Pinto??

During my search for a solution to a no-spark condition, I did various other "repairs" to convince myself I was making progress. One was a cleaning and partial rebuild of the carbs. The kit had the Viton tips I have always lusted after. I had taken the carbs apart to clean them, awaiting the kits, and never really compared the parts, which all seemed to fit.
I just took my carbs out again...these look the same, right?
Oh, and Newmaac, do you have more than one bike? Then you should be using two-cycle oil."Time is the greatest teacher; unfortunately, it kills all of its students."

Yeah, but what if he has 3 bikes?
The needles are different, I think you picked up on that... The tips are different profiles/tapers, the bodies have slightly different architecture. The one on the left looks like the ones in my 80SG/G carbs, but yours is missing the hanger.
When I took apart the 80G carbs a month ago, I found a needle just like the one on the left in the picture, without the hanger on it. The other 3 had the hanger.
The other needle isn't one I'm familiar with.Howard

Me thinks the one on the right has the plunger sticking too far out or it's the wrong needle for the carbs. Look at the taper/size of the the right needle tip, not correct either.Howard

I also have enough bikes that if one does not run for weeks or longer because I did not fix something, it simply does not matter. So I take the time to do it the way I like.
Each to his own as everyone has to ride the bike they ride. Could be a worse answer than just setting them by measurement! Could send it to a dealer and get them to do it.2-79 XS1100 SF

LoHo
I commented on those needles about two years ago.Cant find it now. I took measurements from the top of the valve itself to the pivot point for the float shafts I think. There are actually at least three types of needles used on our carbs. All have different profiles and lengths. The bottom line was that the needles and valve seats are specific to each other, not interchangeable. As a side issue, I also talked about the crappy plastic foam floats from off shore. They are not only different from float to float but also from side to side of the same float. I'd use brass everytime if I could.mack
