    What Steve

said, but be careful doing that to, there was a thread not too long ago about someone bending valves while doing his shimming on the bench. Apparently the head had both cams installed and he had it sitting flat on the bench. When each cam was rotated using a wrench he bent some on each side.

Geez, I never thought about pushing that valve over with the tap. Bummer!

My 79 engine had problems so it didn't run that strong. My 78 was way stronger than my 79. I should of looked at the gears but i needed to get the bike running because every day i don't have my bike i have to spend an extra $20 on gas for my 99 expedition and i wouldn't of had time to fix them till next weekend. And the guy i bought the engine from told be "all the gears are good"... So i put it in my bike and guess what second gear is slipping. Now in a few weeks i will be fixing the gears by flipping the bike over (it sucks I've done it 3 times so far)

It made me think because I did a HeliCoil on one (the PO had JB Welded a plug into a sloppy hole). I did a finger sweep to see if it was clear, and wadded in a paper towel loaded with gear grease to catch the shavings. I guess I got lucky, because the valves never entered my mind.

Good decisions come from experience, but a lot of experience comes from bad decisions. I think Will Rogers said that....

              2 cd gear

I was wondering if you have spoken (politely of course) to the kind gentleman who sold you the motor and lied about the gear problem

Good choice........as that would be wasted time that could be better spent, and that three hours wasted would have that lower shaft assembly out and on the bench.

                      Still

Good move. Nice to see a young man show patience and fore thought at such a time. Still, I'd make a point of seeing him again, just to let him know that he didn't pull one over on you, and that you are the better man in how you handled it. I'd also tell my friends to watch out dealing with the shady pr...k.

                        Lesson to all

who have a spare motor sitting someplace in the shop. Take the time now and pull the gear shaft and look at the gear's, even if they look alright, at least move the washer.

At times like this, a thing called a borescope is very handy. I have one. It's like a miniature version of that snakey telescopic eye thing in War of the Worlds... with a handle and small screen at the other end. I bought one a while ago and first used it to indicate to someone why their engine wouldn't fire..... there on the screen was a clear picture of a holed piston.

Drop something down the CC tunnel? Or a nut in the sump? etc etc.... a boroscope has loads of uses! It has a built-in LED, auto focus and attachments like a magnetic grabber.

Actually, I just found the exact one I bought...... http://www.carbtune.co.uk/fibrescope.html

As it says in the blurb, you really can look at your own teeth (I've done it) and, indeed, just about any normally unreachable part of one's body. I checked out my tonsil removal scars. I really should get a life though, eh?

There was a young man with a borescope
Who's life, without XS, had no hope
                            of spending his day
