Hey all,
Finally joining the ranks of multiple XS ownership! I am pikcing up a 79F this Friday to give some company in the garage to the my nice 80SG and ZRX 1200. Three's company, right?
Label on the steering head says it was built in May, 1979. Color is the brownish factory paint, and has the 79 style grabrail, not the nicer grab rail of the 80 SG, and other 80 model year XS's.
It has a factory "Yamaha" fairing (no lowers though), including oil pressure, oil temp, voltmeter gauges in the fairing. Plus it has a Kerker oil cooler up front.
So far, you guys are saying "ok, what is the interesting part"?
Ok, now to the interesting part, or at least I think so... It is my understanding that 79 model year XS's have a kick starter, yes? This one has the same set up as my 80 SG, with a plug in the kickstarter hole, so I don't believe it has the "plumbing" for a kickstarter, and didn't see a lever tucked up in the storage location. Granted, a lever could be long gone, but what is the deal with the plug in the hole?
CaptonZap indicated that later 79's might have gone to the no-kick start feature although May of 1979 doesn't seem like a late production date for at 79 model, but maybe so. A thought I have is since it has the Yamaha fairing, those models were deemed "touring" oriented, and they did away with the kickstart feature on those units, since they were getting rid of it for 1980 anyway?
As well, was the Kerker oil cooler featured on the faired models, or would that have been an after market add?
Love that 160 mph speedo, fuel gauge and 5 gallon tank though! (it is 5 gallons, yes, or is it a bit more?)
