Good morning fellas. Bad news I'm afraid. Out working on the carbs this morning when I heard "pop". Looked down and see the timing cover cracked in-half with a hold in it. The timing plate somehow came loose, and probably bent the crank. The reason I say that is the timing plate wobbles when u crank it. Two dead clyinders. I

WHAT??? The timing plate coming loose would have nothing to do with the crank bending. I am betting you lost two cylinders because you messed up the gap or totally broke one of the pick-up coils.
My best guess is that bolt in the center of the timing setup was not tight and worked its way out. Letting the timing plate wobble which cracked your timing cover. Realistically, you could run the bike without the timing cover on it.
I bet the bolt is bent that holds the timing plate in. You have to work pretty dang hard ad it to bend the crank on one of these engines.

You most likely just didn't have the centrifugal advance unit lined up correctly. It only fits on ther one way CORRECTLY in the slots in the end on the crank.
It would take a LOT to bend one of these crankshafts.

How in the hades do you bend the crank on one of these bikes?? If the crank is bent, then remove all the timing setup, hit the starter and watch the end of the crank where it attaches. See if you see it out of round in its movement.

What cylinders are dead? I agree that its likely loss of ignition and not bent crank... on that note, did you ever find that cam cap nut? If it started and ran I highly doubt the nut could be responsible for this but hey you could blame it anyways.

It.s my Scottish luck. I removed the timing plate and pulse cranked it. The reluctor wobbles.
What I meant was, at any point prior to assembly of the head and subsequent issue did you take off the timing plate assembly? If you did it may support Steve's point that maybe it wasn't put back on correctly.
With a bent crank I would expect bad noises while it turns over. With the ignition assembly removed from the end of the crank, if it turns over without a tud or bad noise then I dont think you have a crank problem. As previously stated, the crank is hefty. Check the straightness of said ignition plate bolt by rolling it on a flat surface. Just eying it may not be enough.

The sleeve that the bolt runs though (and the timing plate rests on) rests on a pin that holds it in lone. That pin needs to be lined up correctly with the sleeve. If the sleeve is not lined up right it will sit at a slight angle and it will wobble.
You are not going to bend the crank like that.

Maybe the PO did work to the pickup and the bolt just loosened up and caused it to fall our and break the cover..? Probably should use the Blue Lock-tight on that bolt for assembly...
Things dont usually just fall...*cough cough* ...but usually it happens after it was messed with. Either improper torque of lack of thread locker...

Ian, if that engine ran last night, and no one threw a bolt in the crankcase just for fun, I am convinced your crank is not bent. Fully remove the entire timing assembly, not just the plate, then watch the crank, and only the crank.
