I just got done installing my valve cover and ACCT. However, when I cranked the engine, I heard a racket from the cam chain. I immediately turned the bike off and scratched my head. What did I do wrong? The ACCT is from a VStar 650, and it fits the bike. I am pretty confident that I pushed the plunger all the way in prior to install. Did I do any damage to the bike's engine running it for the few seconds that I did? Besides pulling the ACCT off and trying again, any tips? I lined the "C" mark up with the triangle pointed prior to install as well.

Did you adjust your valves when you had the cover off? Sometimes the shims being fully seated for the first time can make a disturbing noise, JAT. I would remove the valve cover again and see if there is XSessive slack in the chain.2H7 (79) owned since '89

This is cam chain noise. Probably rubbing against the tensioner or the guide arms. I'll pull it back off and see if maybe the tensioner was not all the way in when I installed it. Is it nothing more than making sure the triangle arm pointer is lined-up with the "C" on the timing plate, and sliding it in?1979 XS1100F

You need to remove the plug in the front and the spring, then release the rachet and retract the plunger completely before you bolt it on. Bolt it on. Then replace the spring and the front plug and turn the engine over by hand in the direction of rotation before starting it to be certain all is correctGreg

Okay, I did all of that on the first install of it. I'll do it all over again tonight when I get home from work. What direction should I turn the crankshaft? CW, or CCW? There is no reason I have to take the valve cover back off, right?1979 XS1100F

Clockwise when facing the left (timing wheel) side. The crankshaft turns in the opposite direction of the wheels. Easy to remember that way.
EDIT: Check the extended length of that CCT against the OEM tensioner. I'm not sure about that V Star 650 tensioner. JATLast edited by BA80; 11-14-2012, 07:14 PM.Greg

Yes. My bet is I just did something wrong and the chain is hitting the upper or lower guides, or the ACCT itself.1979 XS1100F

The direction you must turn the motor is clearly marked as well on the timing plate. If you did not rotate it at least three turns in that direction to the "C" mark before removing the old one it could be a problem. That depends on cam chain wear and other factors but it is an important step. Note that if you go past the "C" mark do not reverse your direction to bring it back... another revolution to the "C" mark is required.
Yes the centerstand is very important for this procedure as the timing chain can come off of the bottom sprocket if done on the sidestand. Hopefully nothing is damaged but I would be very careful to check everything and definitely turn by hand gently about three full revolutions after installing everything to be sure there is nothing hitting before ever starting or even using the starter to turn it.2-79 XS1100 SF

Yeah, I definitely did not place the plate on "C" prior to removal of the OEM CCT. And, I did not turn it more than one revolution after installing the ACCT. I just hope the chain did not jump the sprocket.1979 XS1100F

Uh Oh that may not be good. Do you have a manual? If not find a post by Catatonic bug (may not have spelled that right as I just call him C-Bug) and download a manual from his site. If you do have a manual then "Maybe" read it through and see if you can find anything you may have done wrong or think you have and let us know.
This is an easy one to goof on but so easy to do right if you follow the procedures on the site and in the manuals. Worse things have happened but doing this wrong may have cost you your valves.2-79 XS1100 SF

And, I did follow the post instructions Steve had, so, I don't fell 100% of the blame. I'll find out tonight if my valves are now bent paperclips.1979 XS1100F
