Thread Jacking 1980 special Carb Help

I ordered the 1979 rebuild kit from the george guy on ebay, the float needles are shot as with 2 pilots. Will for sure do OEM jets when I go for the final tuning process. I am sure I will be spending many hours using that search box....lol, but again I want to thank everyone for their help.

Thread Jacking 1980 special Carb Help

Any good tips on removing the emulsion tubes. I know they are pressed in from the threads I read. These tubes are stuck in there pretty good. I don't want to mushroom the end of the tubes.

Unscrew the main jet then use a wood dowel and tap them out. You will push them out from the main jet side into the carb throat.

Yep, I always have some wooden dowel laying around the shop. That is exactly how I get the emulsion tubes out. I have used it on some I had to really drive out due to the amount of fuel that turned into a brown sand like substance in the emulsion tubes. No damage to the tubes or the threads in them.

Another trick is to pull the main jet out, remove the washer, screw the main jet back in, but not very far, then you can tap on the flat surface of the main jet to get the nozzle to start moving down/out. once it's moved as much as it can, (the jet is now fluch with the tower) you can either take a few turns out on the jet, or like otheres have said find some other persuasion tool to use to push it the rest of the way out.

Penetrating oils and such will help to disolve some of that nasty stuff that's keeping it stuck in there too.

                  1980 carbs

I am going to try the wood dowel some more PB Blaster and some heat. I just needed to know how worried i had to be when beating on those tubes. My carbs were(are) also gummed up with that nasty brown stuff, one of the toughest cleaning jobs I ever had so far.

Jay, just remember that there's a guide pin/stud about 1/4" down inside that tower. It fits into the groove of the emulsion tube. Once the tube gets down that far, your dowel may 'hang up' on that 'tit'.

Gotcha...And the surprises continue...lol...thanks for the heads up. So from that information I take it that you can't twist the tubes out, they have to be pulled straight out.

DO NOT GRAB IT BY THE TOP AND TRY AND PULL IT OUT!!!!!!!! You will damage the top and screw everything up!

Only push it out from the main jet area!

+1 on that Nate. A very long time ago (before I found this site) I tried 'pulling' them out with some needle nose pliers and I did slightly damage that brass a little, I never did find a replacement, but it wasn't that bad, so it's still in the G.
Now, I ALWAYS push them out from the bottom.

Thread Jacking 1980 special Carb Help

OK these tubes are stuck pretty good I am thinking. I used some heat (butane pencil torch) and trusty PB Blaster. So I began trying to drive the tubes out and got nothing but a mushroomed dowel rod. So after a closer examination I saw something that peeked my interest.

so what is this brass pin? Does this thing lock the tube from moving or something? Or am I being to nervous trying not to break something.

That is the little locator pin located just down in the tube. That is the in that is in the notch that you can see from the main jet area. It does not go into the tube just holds it from rotating. If you use heat be very gentle with it.

You did take the top covers off and remove the slides and diaphragms right?
