I know you have an extra field coil. Swap it out and see.

      Process of elimination.

If the field coil tested fine, why swap it and risk harming one or the other?

Still not understanding why you think the alternator is bad if it's charging fine? Why do you still think it's the culprit? It would be screwing with everything on the bike, not just the dash.

FWIW, I know nothing of XJ wiring either. I do know that wiring of this vintage has insulation prone to failure. This will show up in a hot vibrating place like the rotor. I'm a XS650 guy and those bikes short rotors all the time. That rotor is subjected to much more vibration, but I just thought I'd explain why I thought in worthy of investigation. I had one fail intermittently before I got a hard fault.

This problem isn't something that comes and goes with cold/hot etc. Nothing is intermittent about it.

I'm just working on the readings you got from the brushes. Hell, don't try it if you don't want to.

              Just brainstorming.

I just went and got another complete sidecover with stator and brushes intact. Plugged it in and got the same readings on the brushes as the ones I had been testing. Tested the three white wires to the cover first and it was good. No continuity.

That wierd reading your getting is a worry. I wish I was there to see exactly what's going on.

It sounds like a bad diode somewhere.

                    Tod,

If your bike charges all the time, the rotor is OK.

When testing the rotor/brushes ('field winding' in the manual), you have to check at the first plug coming from the rotor. You should see about 4 ohms between the brown and green wires, anything over about 4.5 ohms means your brushes may be getting worn or the slip rings may be dirty. Neither wire should read to ground at this point; if either one reads to ground, you have a problem.

Checking at the plug by the regulator will give false readings because the brown wire also connects to all the other circuits (headlight, turns, ignition, etc; everything but taillight) and you'll read through some/all of those unless you pull the circuit fuses...

If the rotor/brushes check good and the system is charging correctly, I'd rule out the alternator.

At this point, I'd go back to the 'computer monitor'. This has 17 wires connected to it according the wiring diagram, and I'd start by disconnecting all of them except the brown (power in) and ground (black). One thing not shown on the diagram is the 'reset' button, I'd look at that to make sure it's not grounding or internally shorted. If after doing these things, the monitor still shows all systems bad, I'd say the monitor is NFG. If you get a head, tail, and battery fail only (as these would show 'bad'), then start plugging in individual wires until either those indications go out or you get a total 'bad' indication which should show which circuit is the problem. This will be a PITA as you'll have to pull the wires out of the plug and plug them in one by one, but is the only way to check the circuits and their wiring...
