There has to be an electronic control module for that thing to run through it's checks.

Where is that located? Is it integral with the dash unit or is it somewhere else on the bike?

It's integral with the dash unit unfortunately....

The troubleshooting guide in the manual for this pretty much sucks... (if after checking blah blah and it's good, replace the monitor assembly...). Seeing how you've already tried a different unit, I'd look at the lighting grounds; head and tail/brake lights. These get power through the monitor but have their own grounds, if any of those are bad/marginal, you may be getting 'feedback' through the monitor as they search for a ground path. The manual also mentions that having any non-stock-wattage lamps will cause problems, so it might pay to thoroughly clean all lamp sockets/connections too as that may 'fool' the monitor into thinking you have 'wrong' lamps.

You might try swapping the RLU too, as it and the monitor appear to be 'connected'....

It's just strange that all of a sudden all the warning lights came on all at once and won't reset. It really sounds like a module malfunction to me.

I talked to Ivan the other day and he said the R/W wire on the 9-plug connector supplied power to the dash, so he had me check that and it's ground (B wire) with the key on. Both had .04 volts. so I now need to try to track down where that wire comes out of the loom at (Originally goes in) and where the dash is actually getting power from to light up everything?? He said it looks like it joins in with the turn signals, but those are working?? (But were getting short on power and blinking slower and slower??)

So, short answer would be.. not really.

Ivan is a lot better at that crap than I am. .04 volts is way too little though so you better persue that.

You might try running a jumper wire to that connector at the dash and see if that does it. Just so your not chasing your tail. Not that chasing tail is a bad thing but chasing your own might seem a little strange to some even though no one loves you like you.

We went on a ride this last weekend and the bike quit charging. I'd just replaced the R/R plug and thought maybe it melted again, but found a plug next to it with a lot of corrosion on the pins. It's this 4-wire plug next to the R/R plug with 2 red and 2 black wires. Assuming Alt plug? (This is a dirty parts bike, not my rider..)









We went to scrape the pins off and with the key OFF on the ignition, when the two black pins were shorted together while scraping, it sparked and blew my main fuse. Sugggestions on where to look.. and hoping this is my problem I've been trying to hunt down?

That 4-wire plug is your alternator output (red) and ground (black), the same as the red and black on a XS bike. The reason for two of each is the connectors are barely big enough for the XS output, with the higher output of the XJ alternator they used two to carry the current. You shouldn't have blown a fuse with the black wires, you must have briefly touched one of the reds....

That's my point. No red wired pins were touched to black. Even when the bike is charging, it's just barely keeping up. I have to keep unplugging the headlight so it can charge the battery back up, even though it shows it's putting a little over 14 volts out to the battery. Plus... my original dash problem is still there.

I'm starting to wonder if one of your white stator leads is shorted to ground. That could be the case, and you may have stray AC voltages in your ground system. That may or may not affect voltage output, but could show proper voltage but short you on current output so could affect charging. Plus that could foul up the monitor as it does get an AC signal from the alternator.

Try unplugging the stator plug at the regulator and check each white wire to ground. If any of them read to ground, that may be the problem. You might want to unplug the gauges for this test to prevent feedback through the monitor/tach.

Also, those two black wires shouldn't spark to anything except another powered wire, so you may have one of those shorted to something. You may have to split the harness to trace those...
