  • stock header problems

so i built a custom exhaust using stock headers...i also bought new exhaust gaskets...my problem is that i cant get the header stud nuts started. it almost seems that the exhaust gaskets are too thick, causing the studs to not protrude enough for me to get the nuts on there...ive been messing with it for 2 days now and im EXTREMELY frustrated to say the least...

Did you use the headers that came with the bike, or another set? There's two flange lengths, the Special used the shorter ones. If you used '78-79 standard headers, those flanges are longer and the studs will be too short...

the exhaust that came with the bike were 4-1, i got a set of headers from a member on her, and im not sure if they came from a special or standard...so do i need longer studs...im thinking that im just going to remove the studs and use hex head bolts from lowes...

Look here... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37191 ... for a pic of the two flange types. I don't think the studs will be long enough if you have standard pipes, you'll have to change them...

I wouldn't use bolts, you'll quickly wear out the soft aluminum threads in the head that way. New studs should be less that $2 each at any decent bolt place.

Just type "fasteners Houston Texas" in your browsers search box. This brings up lots of places to get them locally. Isn't the internet great?lol
You should be able to bring in a stud and they can match up the threads and get you the length you need. That would be the most economical option as well as assuring you get the right studs the first time.

Are you sure the old gaskets are out of the head?

Got to a place that sells fasteners, bolts and such, and get yourself a stick of stainless 8mm allthread and make them any length you want.

That is the correct size and thread pitch. As for the lenght.........how much too short are the ones you have? Add enough to make them long enough.

You guys are awesome! I never would have come up with the idea to use allthread...i want them to stay in place, 2 questions...

                          1. the studs are only about half as long as the stud wells, should i cut them to be that long, or is it ok to make them long enough to bottom out?

                          2. can i use thread locker to keep them from moving around in there?

I would be careful about using allthread it may be not as strong as a stud.

Stainless steel all thread is plenty strong, stronger than OEM studs.
