Fork oil volume

Just replaced fork seals, using progressive springs and 15wt synthetic oil.
How much to put in? I remember somewhere between 7 and 10oz. No fairing for now but do ride double often with tank, tail and saddle bags.

Taken from the Clymers manual, the 81H model calls for 241cc (8.15 oz) per leg.

Hmmmmm...........my Clymers says 7.17oz or 212cc for the standard forks and 7.61oz or 225cc for the special.

What about if upgraded to progressive springs would that not change the volume? FSM calls for 8.15oz each leg. I misplaced the install sheet that came with the springs which specified how oil to use.

The springs shouldn't really make a difference there because they won't change volume.

Progressive will specify a fork oil volume with their springs as changing weight/amount will change how the fork reacts. If may or may agree with factory specs, I'd contact Progressive to see if it's different. Particularly if converting from the air-assisted factory springs to Progressive units...

bikerphil had it correct. The SH is 7.10oz..........right out of the original owners manual. BTW, the H(Venturer) had progressive springs from the factory, unless someone swapped them out.

My manual doesn't seem to cover the Venturer. Better listen to those that own one and have an original manual.

Seems to only cover the 80 + 81 standards and 81 specials though. Nothing for the SG.

I like it loud.
My factory manual doesn't cover 81. Just 78 to 80.

That's what I specifically remember from my last install but could not find the progressive paperwork that came with the springs. Was trying to avoid a mess with draining/refilling to get correct amount. Oh well, I already put in 8oz in each and plan on buying those syringes, and will not be using air. Will contact Progressive and how far off I am.

I haven't used Progressive springs in a XS, but I have installed them in other forks. They don't generally give an amount, but rather a 'level', i.e. a distance from the top of the fork tube to the oil, that's with the spring out. They're looking for a specific amount of air left in the fork once it's sealed up. A bit of a PITA to measure, I did one side and kept track of how much I put in and duplicated it for the other side... and wrote down the amount for next time...

I used a small sqiare to measure level last time it wasn't too bad.
