I've sounded them out about it. They'll do a production run for us but minimum quantity is 5,000. Now, with the best will in the world, I think it would take a long time to get through that lot! Being a pest and begging is about as good as I can get. I'm beginning to feel like I'm doing them a favour though, since they obviously have no other application for them and are scouring their depots for them. Fortunate for the XS1100 brethren though, I reckon.

Hey James, thought you'd like to know after my exhaust dramas that the Mac 4 into 2 flare tips I bought went straight on with no issues whatsoever. They cleared the oil cooler lines and everything. I must say though that power is somewhat reduced mid range but not enough to worry me. I'll scare up a camera and post some pics when I can.

Just wondering... What kind of symptoms might I experience when the rear wheel bearing is going out? The reason I ask is that I hear a funny intermittant sound coming from that area when I am idling to a stop sometimes. It's there regardless of whether the brakes are being applied, so I know it's not the brakes, and actually sounds like its on the left side. It almost sounds like someone is dragging a small garden rake across the underside of my Vetter trunk (metal tines across plastic). It starts and stops for just a second or so at a time. I can't hear whether its happening while under load with the engine pulling.

I just wonder whether I should be looking at my final drive or the wheel bearing.

It's always tricky to tell with noises. Your best bet is to remove the rear wheel, take out the inner bearing race (just a tube) then remove as much grease from the left rear wheel bearing as you can (if there's actually any decent amount of grease in there at all.....). Personally, I would turn the wheel flat with the left side pointing down and then spray carb cleaner/degreaser spray in there to get the old grease out (with an old towel under the wheel to soak up the gunge). Then, replace the inner race and spin it round with your finger in it. If it feels loose in an up/down direction, or if it's gritty or rough feeling, then I would replace it and also do the right side bearing while you in there (about $6 for than one).

I doubt it's your FD though. They are robust things.

BTW, grease the FD splines whilst the wheel is off......

I still have a few bearings available, so if you do find it's that that's making the noise, just PM me....

I already have the bearing, so I am ready if I need to change it. I attempted the process before I realized how difficult those things are to remove! I'm going to need to have new seals and the RHS bearing ready before I actually take them out, since I will have to destroy them in the process. I kinda cleaned it, and re-greased it and put everything back together, but the noise continued unabated.

                            Well I'll be buggered...

You wouldn't read about it (except here, obviously ), but I just wore out my rear wheel bearings. I got the same sound as the Bug reported so I checked the wheel for sideways play and there's about an 8th of an inch there. I don't have new seals either so I'm just going to replace the wheel with a spare off my parts bike to get me out of trouble. Speaking of new seals, I've looked at ebay and there's nothing there. Anyone have any ideas where I might find a set of new bearing seals?

I thought you bought two left rear bearings from me? Aren't you using one of those? Or do you mean you're going to use the whole spare wheel until you find seals?

Yes.... let that be a lesson to those XSives who have put off buying a replacement, says Mr Smug.
