  • Rear bearing noise?

Sunday, I went to the store, and as I was pushing the XJ bike backwards out of a parking spot, with the engine off, I heard some clicking coming from the back end. With the bags and tail box on, it was hard to get a better location of the noise. I rode it home, and turned off the engine, and pushed it forward, and got the same sound.
It is sort of random, 4-8 per wheel revolution, and sounds like a twig against some spokes on a bicycle.
So the question is, for those of you who have had a left side rear bearing go out, what sort of indications were there that it was bad?
James? Any words of wisdom? How did you discover your bad bearing?
    Thanks for any feedback, CZ

I know there was a lot of talk in the past about clicking coming from rear wheel. I think it was narrowed down to something with the hub. I feel someone replaced tge o-ring behind the hub with a thicker one maybe?

Some of the Aussie guys fought this for awhile.

Yup, it was the cushion drive rubbing inside the wheel. They fixed it with a piece of gasket material.

I'll see if I can find the video.

It was definitely a video on here, posted by an XSive in Australia. Yes, it's something to do with gasket/spacer thing on the cush drive.

A failed wheel bearing doesn't make that nose. More like a continuous gritty sound......

If the previous does not fix the issue: I had some noise once with one of my 11's where the grease had hardened on the radial gear splines on the rear hub. I had to remove it with a screwdriver and reapply fresh grease.

His problem was he powdercoated the wheel and baked the drive cushions to death with the powder cure heat....

Where did that come from Steve? If you watch the whole video you'll see that it was with 2 different wheels.

I don't see anything that would give that indication.

But if you look later in the thread, he put a different wheel on that was NOT powder coated which exhibited the same problem so while that was postulated as an issue it was ruled out seeing as the wheel without the powder coating had the same click, and the fix was the same for both. The only issue for the powder coated wheel was the rubber inserts were loose, but the click didn't come from them.

It's not the powdercoating that caused the noise. There have been over 20 documented cases of this noise happening and they all hadn't had the wheel powdercoated. They all were, however bikes with the swirly wheels, mostly the Rh / Sports but the occasional XJ. No one with a straight spoke wheel has had the same problem so far, so it must be something that changed in the hub design on the latest XS'S & XJ's, even though the hub dimensions are identical to the Special wheels being 8mm narrower at the disc flange.

Are there any safety issues with this clicking noise ? My 82 Maxim does it every time I push it around.

Wow! An embarrassment of riches, informationally speaking.
Thanks for all the reply's, guys. I'll add my observations, when I've come to a conclusion as to cause.
Hey Wombat, here is a question.
If you put it up on the center stand, and turn the wheel, does it still click?
Mine doesn't. Only when it is on the ground, forward and back ward , all about the same.
Anyway, having a few avenues of investigation is a good thing.

Now that you mention it, I also have never heard the clicking when the tire free wheels. I would guess that it clicks 3-4 times per full revolution when rolled under load. Still wondering if this is a concern or just a quirk?
