  • cct problems...

so im doing a valve job, and had to remove the cct...i was looking online to figure out how to adjust it upon re-installation, and realized that mine is not functioning properly...first there is no locing screw, just a brass locking bolt, it looks more like a hollow plumbing bolt than an oem one, also there isnt an oring or washer...then once i pulled it off the bike, there is no slack in the spring or the rod, in fact it wont budge at all...i cant take the spring or rod off, and i cant compress it in....

79 XS11 special "Loki" - homemade 4-2 exhaust, pod filters, rebuilt forks with progressive springs, tkat fork brace, progressive shocks, rebuilt all brakes and MC's, rebuilt carbs with #142.5 main and #42.5 pilot, a custom front and chin fairing, and a handmade set of saddlebags....

Sounds like your best option is to replace it with an auto ratcheting one. Unless you you planned to have the bike back together for tomorrows commute, I wouldnt waste one second on that thing. It sounds like its been PO'ed.

Ps. You're supposed to unlock the set screw to be able to move the plunger. If you have already released it, it might be hung up on a burr on the plunger shaft...

Yeah, you would need to loosen that brass bolt there for the plunger to move. But I do agree, go with one of the auto cct's and then forget about it.

+2 on the auto CCT. I recently had the stock unit back out and cause a loose chain, even after torquing the set screw to the factory torque spec. The auto CCT unit is now on and installation was easy, save for a little filing of the mounting holes. It cannot back out, and needs no adjustment.

You get the right one and there is no filing involved...

            Put one in my G

            Yeah, +1 on the ACCT.
            I picked up a Raptor 660 ACCT off ebay for 1.99 + 6.00 S&H.
Put it on Sunday and it was a direct fit, no filing needed.
Even the stock (new) gasket was a match.

I used the Raptor 660 unit as well, but did need to reem the holes slightly. The mounting bolts would begin to thread, but not go in finger tight. I could have wrenched them in with a hex key, but a little filing on this one was the way to go.

Eric, Maybe there's a sllight difference between the SF and G so that mine didn't have any issues with the bolts.
I was a little worried that the bolts might be too long, but it snugged down real easy and the bolts didn't bottom out.

After I got it in there, I went ahead and rotated the crank by hand to see what was going to happen and as it spun, I could hear the clicks and the slack went away. WHOO HOO!

Either way, the ACCT IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO!

George, I wonder if it's a variance when they drill the cct mounting holes in the casting. Either way, the ease of installation and improved control of the cam chain is reason enough to upgrade.

There are a lot of 660 Raptor CCT are they supposed to have some kind of shoe or wiper on the end of the plunger? Both of my factory ones are leaking, 1 real bad and I want to replace them
                        Thanks
