+1 what greg says, start from scratch and go from there.
personally i think 145 mains with 45 pilots are to big.

          running out of fuel?

You said it behaves like it's running out of fuel? Maybe it is. When you stopped and put gasoline in it, did it run fine for 40 miles and then quit? If thats the case, your fuel cap could be at fault. Is the visible portion in good condition? Remove the cap and take it apart. There is a piece of foam in there, and after 30 years, it has rotted. It's plugging the vent. I replaced mine with a tiny piece of Scotch Brite. If the sealing ring is hard and cracked, this may not be the problem as it will vent through those cracks.

Can't argue with all the first hand experience of the people that find those 210 air jets in their '78's.

More like 7500, and I don't spend much time there other than In first gear (and I can get up there in first).

Also, since the '78's came that way stock, no I don't think that is the problem!

I'll do that. The only thing is, those 45 pilots you have in there may be too big then. Do you still have the original 42.5s?

45 was stock. Never had 42.5.

                            Hi Greg,
OTOH, I fought with my SG's ignition for an entire effin' week to no avail.
A quickie carb clean fixed her right up.

@ jet mech, no i went through the vent, thats fine, i can audibly hear it venting sometimes when i stop...when i filled it up it ran the same...im doing the spark plug mod, and #3 and #4 plugs have a light tan color, very good, #2 and #1 have a sooty look with only a quarter of the porcelain tan, it seems maybe those 2 are running a bit rich...i ordered a bunch of jets to play with, i now have 147.5 145 and 142.5 mains, 45 and 42.5 pilots, and 180 and 210 air jets to play with...gotta wait for my gauges to come in so i can make my carb sync tool as my buddy finally took his back....
