  • What did I just do... timing

So I've still go my ever present oil leak from the left side. I decided to be brave, remove the timing mechanism and replace the seal. I marked the screws, and the timing plate. Got the seal replaced pretty easy, put everything back together.

Then I went to start it, once. It made a funny noise, and now the timing plate is about 180 degrees from where I marked it.

Uhhh... what did I just do and what do I do to fix it?

Then most likely the timing plate is installed 180 degrees off. It does have a slight difference but can be put in wrong.

Possible but it would have to be forced Doug. The slot is offset to one side.

I agree Greg but some members have pulled it off. So it was JAT to check.

The screws and timing plate were definitely put back on where I marked them. Normally the bike cranks instantly, so the noise was just the bike hiccuping and not starting.

I guess what I'm wondering is how should I go about getting the timing plate back to where it was marked.

By the timing plate do you mean the round plate with the marks on it or the breaker plate that the pickup coils are mounted to.

That plate is supposed to spin when you turn the engine over. Is it on there correctly and tight?

Alright, so it will not start. It cranks, and it sputters a bit if I get it a little gas. However, it doesn't even start to turn over.

Sorry if you think I am being rude but ... "Cranks and sputters" is not the same to us as "doesn't even start to turn over".
If you could be a tad more descriptive of the problem we would (possibly) not be telling you to check if it is seized because it will not "turn over" as opposed to it does crank over but "I have no spark on any piston". I know if I follow the thread I will have the general idea, but it is suprising how simple wording can change the whole theme of a thread. JAT
