Parts Interchange Guide?
Would there be any interest in a 'definitive' parts interchange guide tech tip? These questions come up on a regular basis, and it can get pretty confusing if you're not aware of some of the minor and major differences between models...

...but it shouldn't be as bad as you might think. A fair chunk of this info is already posted somewhere on this site, so a guide could be 'shrunk' a bit by providing links to some of the stuff that's covered. And if it's limited to fit/function, that would rule out the differences that are only cosmetic. And you'd have to limit it to US models only, because trying to figure in the 'world' versions would make it hopelessly confusing for most members. Or maybe some non-US members would like to cook up the guides for their models?

I think it would be a GREAT idea! listing things like wheels, TCI, Timing parts, camshafts, valves, fenders, sidecovers, etc. would really answer a lot of questions for a lot of people trying to do restorations. However, a lot of this information is available on the benefiscal site. Under each part number, it states what models the part is used on.
There may be times when certain parts may have different part numbers, but will still fit the function on a different model. For example, the brake pedal on the LH is a unique part number, as is the same pedal on the LG. However, if I'm not mistaken, its the same shape as all the other models' pedals, even though the part number for the brake pedal on the E, F and G is different from that of the SF, SG, H and SH. That's 4 different part numbers for the same part - 2 of them are just painted black.1980 XS850SG - Sold

That's the kind of thing I'm talking about; because of different finishes, the parts fiche show different numbers but doesn't tell you if it actually fits. And there actually are two different pedals; the '78-80 standard, and everything else. Slightly different shapes (the 'standard' pedal has less curve in it), enough that you might have issues getting pedal height good with a standard pedal in place of the Special unit...Originally posted by CatatonicBug View Post

Great idea Steve.
What my also be a helpfull is to make it flexible enough to include linkage to items that can be easily modified to fit certian models. Like for instance MIKES XS has the handlebar switches that can work with rewiring, Those things that are near impossible to find now are arlso quite common questions that pop up and someone here always has the answer.To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

No, it doesn't have to be that detailed....
But it would be nice to have kind of a 'quick reference guide' to at least point you in the right direction. I don't know if linking to particular parts suppliers would necessarily be helpful as they do change things from time to time and finding dead links is frustrating.

perhaps just list the changes and differences for each year/model, then let people figure it out for themselves.1979 xs special, just finished the top end rebuild and then i still have lots of work.

I would have thought anyone chopping their bike would care lots what parts would fit from other models.
The folk I'd have thought wouldn't care are the original restorers, why would they want to know what none original part would fit their bike.
