I bought my 4 brand-new ones last year from the USA. There's no shortage whatsoever and they are now readily available, at a reasonable price, from two suppliers.

I'm slowly making progress on my conversion. I have finished the design for the 30-1 crank trigger wheel, the PCM (modified microsquirt), the voltage regulator (to charge the custom LiFe pack used to make much more room for the header tank), aluminum header tank for fuel pump, etc. I should have 3 hours tomorrow morning to work on the crank trigger at the shop, so hopefully the wheel will be done within a couple of days.

This is going slower than I anticipated, but I tend to go slow on projects like this and TRY to make sure I do it right the first time. I'm still debating on if I want to include ignition drivers in my PCM and use the existing Accel coils, or leave it off and go with the LS1-LS6 coils instead. Pros and cons either way I go on that.

Oh, and I did the math: If I can get my mileage up to 40 mpg (versus 30 mpg currently) AND be able to use all 5.5 gallons of the main tank (due to the header tank and versus 4.1 gallons usable currently because one of my petcocks does not work on reserve even after cleaning and rebuilding!), my effective range will go from 122 miles to 220 miles. I could definitely live with a 100 mile increase in range! If, like some folks have seen, I can get that mpg up to 45, then the range goes up to almost 250 miles, more than 2 fold my current range. Not bad...

All that work to improve the MPG to what the bike should get stock. I get 50 at higher elevations, and taking it easy. Other than that i run 38 to 40 consistantly.

Not really. Carbs don't have accurate enough fuel control for bikes of this power and size. Yes they can get better, but EFI can still do it better and more accurately. That's how modern bikes can do this because they can not only run the bike well, but can adjust as lean as it can handle without damage and can adjust to conditions, something a carb can't do. That's why EFI systems have an oxygen sensor, so they can tell what's happening and the computer can adjust things to current conditions, where a carb is at best tuned for the average conditions you will encounter.

And when your hobbies include electronics and machining, it's kind of hard to call it "work". Changing the rear tire with a tubed rim, now THAT is work...

I've had this bike since 1989 when it only had 17,000 miles on it. It has NEVER gotten better than 36 mpg is the last 60,000 miles or so. Not even before they started watering down the gas with alcohol. And I don't ALWAYS ride it that hard.!

For the record my other bike is a 2008 Honda VTX 1800 Vtwin. It if FI. It gets 45mpg and its rated at 107hp and 120ft/lbs
I have never had to dink with it and I've changed pipes
There is no choke, the computer handles that and it starts as good as anything I've had and idles down as it warms up
It has an idle adjustment so yeat it can be set.
Adding FI to one of these bikes will never be mainstream. With modern bikes the factory engineers already have it tweaked for the majority of riders. Only those who want to dabble do and they do it with a laptop. Beats pulling the tank any day. Should smoeone produce a kit it will be prohibibly expensive as there will be few to spread the cost over. I can't see ever choosing a carbureted bike over a FI bike given everything else the same. Its kind of like EI or points. No there are no points to change but then again you probably wouldn't need to

that,s dumb, I can adjust the idle on my FI Suzuki DL1000, have on more than one occasion....
