I do not recall anything about replacement float needle valves or seats being a problem.

As to Needle position, I would set them all the same unless you know one cylinder has poor compression. If you have stock exhaust and stock air box, most find the center postion works best.

As to fluid, you can use DOT 3 or DOT 4. You do not want to put DOT 5 in a system that has had DOT 3 or 4 without a very very thorough cleaning and flushing. The DOT 5 does not work and play well with its older siblings!

Sorry to hear the PO passed away, but, at least his old ride found a new loving home first.

@DGSXER - sorry, I did not mean float needles, I was talking about the mains. I will be doing a compression later this week. Below is the posting I mentioned about needles.

He's the best price, and pretty much all you'll find are K&L kits anyway. You can buy everything separately but that will get expensive. The issue with these kits is the furnished jet needles have been reported as causing problems as well as the main/pilots jets. Genuine Mikuni jets seem to work better, the jet needles are NLA so unless your's are heavily worn or damaged, reuse the stock ones.
The kits are a decent deal because they include the bowl gasket, float valve and seat, and new idle screws (besides the other jets) all of which will probably need replacing. Buying these separate can be the same $ or more as a kit.

DO make sure the furnished parts match what you pull out, as there have been problems with incorrect jets in the kits on occasion.

          *******************************************

I realize this is just one opinion, but it makes me think. And I am not sure what NLA means.

My suggestion is to use the stock needles with the clip in the center position. Brass floats (if you still have them) set to 1" above gasket surface, gasket removed.

                NLA= no longer available.

Steve is correct about the needles, the ones in the kits are not the same and do cause problems often times. If yours are good reuse them.

All right Guys, I like a joke like anyone else. But it is mean to not tell the new guys about the fun they will have reassembling the diaphram assembly and putting the cap on top of the diaphram. I mean, I only have ten fingers and they only point two ways at a time. Plus they are too thick to hold the rubber until the top is down. Anyone know a trained octopus I could borrow?

OK, it has been interesting. I have a couple of them in place and think the next two will be a little easier now that I have "experience". Wired the pin to the broken float post and think it is going to work. Everything looks pretty good so far. Can't wait to get it running.

I put vaseline in the groove before I out the diaphragm in and that usually holds it long enough for me to get the cover on.

Nate - that sounds like a good idea.

It is almost done. One more top to put on. Unfortunately, I am using a borrowed garage and it has no light, so when the sun went down ...
Oh well, the sun'll come up tomorrow.

When this is done I will still have fluids to change and some wiring to check out, but it's getting closer.

Alright, everything is back together - and without any left over parts. Now I hope the float/needle holds. I set it pretty close to the recomendations. Thanks guys for all the help and support.

Oh, just in case - I sometimes forget that my qwirky sense of humor does not always translate well on the internet. The bit about the diaphram installation was meant to be an attempt at humor. Hope it was taken that way.

Finally did the compression test today. I do not have the carbs in yet so I could not warm it up before testing. I think the readings are pretty good: 155, 150, 150, 148. I will do it again when I can warm it up properly.

Removed and reinstalled the intake boots to make sure there is a good seal to avoid air leaks. May get the carbs mounted tomorrow.

Did some cleaning getting ready to change the fluids. The middle drive plug has some rounding on the corners, but I think it is still useable. Now to make some of the paper dipsticks.
