    Hi Dave,
here's a quick fix; take that nasty plastic sail off the bike.
If it ain't there the exhaust gases can't get trapped behind it and it can't throw the exhaust noise back at you neither.

The only time that I heard of exhaust fumes making it to the rider was when Dave Hogue had a bad head/exhaust crush washer. Camp XS '98 in Gillette, Wyoming? If you are in motion, you should net get any fumes behind your Vetter faring windscreen!

Obviously someone who's never ridden with a Vetter or Windjammer. Every person I know that's used one has said the same thing.

That is a Jardine 4 into 1 that you have there. The header pipes are individual and removable from the rear megaphone. I wonder if one could be leaking below the bike.

I removed my Jardine baffle and am trying a Vance Hines competition baffle in its place (more ricey ). The Jardine baffle is actually fairly quiet. My brother thought it was too quiet, but his 2009 Bonneville sounds like an air compressor. Post a pic and I can tell you if it's a Jardine. If not, you could always buy a Vance Hines street baffle as it can be made to fit. Dynoman.net sells them. I had to grind the inner cone of the baffle down to get it to go far enough into the megaphone to match the baffle bolt hole.

Well Trbig, I guess that makes me special because I have three windjammers and have not been fumed. Mine do not have the vents.

You will get that with the unvented windshield. Get the vented windshield for the fairing and open the vents and the problem goes away. Also the pushing from behind goes away as well, which is why I keep my vents open year round. Both the smell is eliminated and the vacuum effect is gone. I also prefer a little shorter windshield so I can get my head up into the air just a little, or duck slightly and be out of the wind.

LOL.. OK. If you have wind hitting you from behind, then you're going to get some exhaust smell. It's not getting fumed, as you say, but you will be able to smell it. However your setup.. or denial.. is, then I'm telling you it's a normal occurance from a correctly functioning, non-leaking exhaust and a normal Vetter or Windjammer setup. If you've got wind hitting you from behind like normal, and you don't smell any exhaust, then I'm betting others smell it on you when you get off the bike.

Did they ever make a vented set up for the PacificO (Nate:P) fairing?

I have to agree with tod here, if you don't have the vented shield you're going to get fumes sucked into the area behind the fairing. It's why the vented shields exist, to stop that from happening. I've run Vetter fairings both ways and you do get fumes without the vents. You might not smell them if the windshield is short enough though.

Alrighty.. I removed the fairing since it was so warm today and around town it kinda sucks. And I prefer the original square headlight on the 78 instead of the round sealed beam on the fairing. lol.

Ya, the pressure pushing me forwards does get old after a while. I can see where the exhaust will be sucked back in.

Upon further inspection of the exhaust, I honestly don't see how it comes apart. It appears to be one piece from the headers to the muffler.

Will snap more pics I guess.

Nope. But the vents are easy to add. These here are marketed for ultralight aircraft but they are the same and way cheaper than the ones Vetter sells.

The head pipes slip into the megaphone collector....

But the baffle should be held in by a bolt or screw on the backside of the megaphone. The Jardine baffle looks like this.......

Just a thought here, but I recommend checking that the crush washer / gasket is installed between the head and header pipes.

I've also been getting the exhaust smell with my windjammer installed, but for the moment have assumed it is due to the lack of these gaskets. Have a set on order from J & P, and will let you know if that fixes it for me.

                                Good luck,
